Girls tennis: SHS tops Trojans to improve to 5-3

Sequim’s girls tennis squad took two of three Olympic League match-ups in their first competition back from spring break.

The Wolves took on a tough Bainbridge team at home on April 9 and nearly knocked off the 3A Spartans, falling 5-2.

Sequim’s Tiffany Lam won the longest and closest match-up, outlasting Bainbridge’s No. 2 singles player Ruby Morrow in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4.

Sequim’s No. 4 doubles team of Azlyn Judd and Kristin Prorok picked up the other SHS win, also in three sets (5-7, 6-4, 10-5) over Elsa Drugge and Hazel Gori.

Sequim’s Amara Gonzalez battled Gabby Farley in a tough No. 3 singles match that Farley won 7-5, 6-4.

A day later, Sequim earned a 7-0 sweep at Bremerton.

Sequim’s Calleigh Thompson outlasted Knight Helena Rode 6-4, 6-1, while Lam and Gonzalez didn’t lose a point in matches against Kali Liu and Akina Pritchard.

SHS’s Dani Herman and Sydney Hegvedt similarly dominated their match at No. 1 doubles, a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bremerton’s Marilyn Lorenzo and Alejandra Mendoza.

Kendall Day and Payton Smithson earned a win at No. 2 doubles, edging Bremerton’s Charlize Cabig and Kieran Flanagan 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

Also earning wins for Sequim were Keira Morey and Sydney Thomas-Harris at No. 3 doubles and Azlyn Judd and Kristine Prorok at No. 4 doubles.

Sequim’s Wolves (5-3) capped the week with a 5-2 win over Olympic.

Thompson, Lam and Gonzalez swept the singles matches with wins over Trojans Nya Shride, Chelsea Barber and Leah Brashear, while the Trojans picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Judd and Prorok topped Mikaela Bulusan and Leelah Stovall 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles while Kim Heintz and Taylor Heyting topped Olympic’s Rylee Brasher and Nadia Mytiv 6-2 and 7-5.

In their final match prior to spring break, Sequim netted its third consecutive win in a big way. Lead singles players Thompson, Lam and Gonzalez, the Wolves dominated all seven matched in a 7-0 sweep of Port Angeles on the road on March 28. The Sequim trio z won their matches over Roughriders Bridget Weed, Jule Getzin and Audrey Rudd without losing a point.

Looking ahead

Sequim was scheduled to host league powerhouse North Kitsap on April 15; results were not available at press time.

The Wolves are at North Mason on April 17 and host Kingston on April 18. Sequim is at Olympic on April 22 before finishing the regular season on April 24 at home against rival Port Angeles.
