A Rose Bowl champ, a Pac-10 champ and now a Sonny Sixkiller Celebrity Golf Classic champ … with some help from local aces.
Marques Tuiasosopo, former University of Washington quarterback star, joined forces with Ron Grant, Sid Krumpe, Michael Littman and Chad Wagner to shoot a 55 to win the fifth golf tourney hosted by Sixkiller, a fellow former UW quarterback great, at Sequim’s The Cedars at Dungeness golf course on July 24.
Tuiasosopo’s squad edged a team led by Robb Weller — former UW cheerleader often singled out as originator of “The Wave” in 1981 and the first host of “Entertainment Tonight” — by a single shot. Weller’s team included Travis Davidson, Rick Hoover, John Raske and Dan Wilder Jr.
The tourney, presented by Wilder Auto Center, raises funds for the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.
Sixkiller annually lines up a who’s who list of more than 30 Husky legends to play in the golf tournament, including Bob Schloredt, Nesby Glasgow, Keith Gilbertson, Robin Earl and Steve Emtman.
This year’s event — which included a fundraising dinner and auction the evening before — raised about $51,000, said Bruce Skinner, executive director of the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.
“(It) is by far the most we’ve ever had,” Skinner said, noting 38 Husky legends were in attendance last week, 36 of them playing the course Friday.
Skinner said his favorite part of the annual golf classic is the camaraderie the Huskies and event participants alike bring.
“You get a lot of Huskies who haven’t seen each other in 40 years; when they get together they create a lot of spirit for the event. The (locals) feel the event is important to the celebrities.”
