Local prep stars shine for WWU track teams

Once Wolves and Redhawks and Roughriders, these Vikings helped their newest school to strong finishes at Western Washington University’s conference final.

Western Washington senior Jasmine McMullin — a 2013 Sequim High graduate — won the triple jump (39-6.5) and placed third in the long jump (17-11.75) at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference track and field outdoor championships last weekend in Monmouth, Ore., to lead a pack of local athletes.

2015 Sequim High graduate Alex Barry took top honors in the javelin with a 198-foot, 11.75-inch throw.

Brittany Grant, a Port Townsend High grad, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:43) and Peter Butler of Port Angeles took seventh in men’s 10,000 meter race (31:59).

Sequim High 2016 graduate Waverly Shreffler took sixth in her preliminary heat of the 800-meter race (2:25) but missed out on the finals.

Western’s men took second overall, just two points back of Alaska-Anchorage, while Western’s women placed fifth in the 10-team meet.
