Sequim Middle School’s boys basketball eighth-grade squad edged Chimacum, 43-41, their second consecutive close call in as many games.

Dylan Lott sank a key free throw and Chimacum missed a near full-court shot at the buzzer to preserve the Sequim win.

Chimacum held a six-point lead at halftime but Sequim turned a corner in the third quarter, Sequim coach Kris Henrikson said.

"Our press break created some turnovers and easy baskets to bring us right back into the game," he said.

"This was one of those gut-check games. I’m very pleased to see our kids respond when we needed them to and come away with a win. Now, hopefully we can gain some bigger leads in our next few games, so that my blood pressure won’t be so high."

Sequim earned a similar win, taking on and beating Neah Bay 52-50 on Jan. 14.

Lott led all scorers with 28 points while Tim Tyler, Jake Sparks and James Thayer battled tough inside. Tyler added 10 points and Sparks had eight points. Patrick McCrorie led the team in assists. 

"Give a lot of credit to Neah Bay for playing very tenacious," Henrikson said. "They are a good team. We talked throughout the game about playing with heart, and in this close game, we sure needed it."

Sequim’s final home game is Jan. 23, as the Timberwolves take on Blue Heron at 4:45 p.m. Sequim then plays at Chimacum on Jan. 24 and finishes the season Jan. 28 at Stevens (Port Angeles.)
