Klahhane gymnasts compete at state

Four Level 5 gymnasts from Klahhane Gymnastics participated in the Level 5 state championships on May 2 at Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish.

Ashlynn Uvila led the club scoring a season high of 34.025 all- around points, good for 22nd place in the 10A age group.

Also participating were: Katyn Flores, who finished 20th in the 9B age group with a score of 33.05 points; Maya Wharton, also in the 9B age group, who scored 32.025 points; and Clarissa Preston, competing in the 11A age group, scored 32.90 points.

The final event for the club this season is the Garden City Invitational in Victoria, British Columbia, from May 15-17.

Sequim Martial Arts brings home medals

Athletes from Sequim Martial Arts brought home eight top-five finishes and more after a fine showing at the 36th-annual Shorinryu Open Karate Championships in Kent this April.

Xisa Dove took first place in the Intermediate Fighting Junior Women’s Division.

Victoria Cummins took second place in the Intermediate Weapons Junior Mixed Division while Jonathan Lewis took second in the Novice Fighting Junior Men’s Division.

Gary Laxson finished in third place in the Intermediate Fighting Adult Men’s Division while Rachel Lewis was fourth in the Novice Forms Junior Mixed Division.

Kathrin Sumpter, Sequim Martial Arts instructor, earned three top-five finishes at the tournament: second in the Black Belt Fighting Senior Women’s Division, third in Black Belt Fighting Adult Women’s Division and fourth in the Black Belt Weapons Adult Mixed Division.

Sam Manders, assistant instructor for Sequim Martial Arts’ SMARTS teen class, earned recognition in three categories: Advanced Weapons Junior Men’s Division, Advanced Forms Junior Mixed Division and Advanced Fighting Junior Men’s Division.

SkyRidge hosts

ESPN challenge

The SkyRidge Golf Course, 7015 Old Olympic Highway, hosts its 2009 ESPN Challenge on Sunday, May 31. The two-person best ball competition is a local qualifying event with the national tourney slated for October in Las Vegas.

Cost is $65 per player that includes a dozen high quality Callaway golf balls.

Speedway hosts

demo derby

The Port Angeles Speedway will be hosting the WADD/Kitsap/P.A. Demolition Derby at the speedway this Saturday, May 16.

Spectator gates open at

4 p.m. with qualifying starting at 5 p.m. Derby drivers compete for the top prize and the bragging right to be called the champion of the derby.

Children under 12 with a parent or guardian get in free.

Midgets, stock cars, hobby stocks and quads also are scheduled to compete at the speedway in regular competition. For more information, call 452-5175.

Diaz sinks hole-in-one

Paul Diaz of Sequim hit an ace at The Cedars at Dungeness on May 8.

Diaz used a 7 iron to drive the 150-yard fourth hole at the course.

A host of golfers witnessed the feat including Garrett and Grant Smithson, Bill Shea and Sandy Sparks of Sequim and Mike Steim of Port Angeles.

Volunteers needed for Sequim-P.A. marathon

Organizers of this year’s North Olympic Discovery Marathon are looking for helpers for the race weekend, slated for June 6-7.

Volunteer opportunities vary, from registration setup and shirt/kit assembly to course setup, course marshals, aid station helpers, finish line helpers, post-race cleanup and more.

Volunteers get a special race T-shirt and invitation to the Windermere Volunteer Thank You party/dinner.

Golf for Grads

set for May 23

The Golf for Graduates golf tourney, a four-person scramble, is scheduled for a shotgun start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, at SkyRidge Golf Course, 7015 Old Olympic Highway.

On the day of the tournament, tourney organizers auction off members of the Sequim High School golf teams (boys and girls) to add as a fifth player to the team.

Cost is $50 per person or $200 per team. Cost includes 18 holes of play, range balls, a gourmet lunch, awards, dessert and prizes.

Mulligans are $5, $10 per honey pot and $1 for long putt; all extra fees are optional.

The Parents for Safe Kids, through the Community Foundation of Sequim, sponsors the tournament. Funds raised go to the Class of 2009 alcohol- and drug-free party following commencement ceremonies on June 12. For more information, call 683-3673.

Co-ed softball league starts in June

The Sequim Boys & Girls Club hosts a co-ed softball league starting June 22.

Teams must have at least three women or at least three men.

Cost is $35 per team. Games are once per week and are played at the green fields near Sequim High School and at Carrie Blake Park.
