Glasser, Piety take Sunland titles
Sequim’s Greg Glasser and Bobby Piety won men’s and women’s 2021 Sunland Club Championship titles, respectively, after a three-day tourney on Aug. 9, Aug. 11 and Aug. 13.
Glasser, a longtime Sequim High basketball coach, overcame a tough first round (85) to shoot a 74 on day two and a 77 on day three. He edged out Mike Mullikin, the three-time defending club champ, and Jay Tomlin by a single stroke. Longtime Sunland member John Sims won the overall net championship.
Piety defended her 2020 title and, with the 2020 Super Seniors Club Championship last fall, has as won three club championships in the past year. She won by seven shots over Irene Schmidt. Alice Myers, who club members say had several near misses in the past, finally scored her first overall Sunland net title.
Soccer referees sought
A field clinic for aspiring youth soccer referees will be held at the Agnew soccer field from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28.
Referees ages 13 and older are in high demand across the state and on the North Olympic Peninsula.
Registration for new referees is a two-step process.
The first step is to take the online course on the Washington State Referee Committee website at WAReferees.org. Click on “I want to be a referee” and follow the directions. The test must be completed by Wednesday, Aug. 25.
Once potential referees have passed the test, then they will sign up for the field clinic.
The U.S. Soccer Federation registration allows referees to officiate games around the state and to register with the Washington Officials Association, which governs high school officials.
