Winter sports continue on with a full slate. Here is a roundup of some of last week’s events.
Girls basketball sets fast pace
Fast and furious was Sequim’s pace in its home opener against the East Jefferson Rivals on Dec. 2.
The Wolves nabbed 26 steals in the 58-40 win led by guard Gracie Chartraw recording 30 points, eight steals, seven assists and five rebounds.
Nine of those 30 points and two of the assists on baskets by Hailey Wagner came in the pivotal third quarter as Sequim opened up a 22-point lead heading to the final frame.
“The girls worked hard on both sides of the court,” Sequim coach Joclin Julmist said.
Wagner added 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting with a team high seven rebounds, five offensive. She added four steals and three assists.
“Hailey had a great game offensively and defensively. Jordyn (Julmist) and Kaiya Robinson both played well. It was a good first game.”
In their second game of the season, the Wolves won in Kingston 73-28 on Dec. 4 behind Wagner recording career highs in points (20) and rebounds (11).
“The girls worked hard on the defensive side,” coach Joclin Julmist said.
“Jordyn [Julmist] had a good game with 14 points and was the primary defender on their best player. She rebounded with seven boards.”
The freshman added four steals and four assists.
Chartraw led Sequim with 26 points and had a team high seven assists. Robinson scored five and swiped three steals with a pair of blocks.
To finish the week on Dec. 6 in Anacortes, a fourth-quarter rally came up just short in a 40-38 road loss. Sequim outscored Anacortes 15-2 in the fourth, but couldn’t make up a 15-point deficit.
“We struggled from the field today, but the girls played hard,” said Joclin Julmist.
Chartraw led the Wolves with 11 points and six steals, while Jordyn Julmist had 10 points, six rebounds and four steals. Indi Mixon had six points and 11 rebounds, while Wagner had six points and 14 rebounds.
Sequim (2-0, 2-1) was set to host North Mason on Tuesday and Bainbridge on Friday.
Flag football squad wins first official games
The Wolves overpowered Port Angeles 42-7 and just edged North Kitsap 15-14 in overtime on Dec. 4 in their first doubleheader flag football matches of the season.
Sequim traveled to Bainbridge for the games, and is set to play two more games on Dec. 11 in Klahowya before hosting their first home games on Thursday, Dec. 18.
Against the Roughriders, Sequim’s Ruby Moxley-Horgan had three rushing touchdowns while Olive Bridge caught Sequim’s first official touchdown as a team. Sydney Thomas-Harris also recorded a touchdown catch and Kiley Winter had a rushing touchdown. The team opted for automatic extra points.
Olivia Jameson recorded an interception and Lily Sparks had a solid night at quarterback, said head coach Kathleen Rose.
One touchdown was also called back inadvertently for the Wolves as referee crews become accustomed to the sport, she said.
Against the Vikings, Sequim held North Kitsap to no points in overtime, and on the Wolves’ second attempt, quarterback Lily Sparks threw the game winning point to Moxley-Horgan for the one point win (15-14). In the contest, Moxley-Horgan and Winter recorded touchdown catches.
Boys basketball wins at home against Bucs
Mason Rapelje and Solomon Sheppard each poured in 23 points as the Wolves opened Olympic League play with a 68-62 win over Kingston at Rick Kaps Gymnasium on Dec. 4.
“Solomon and Mason played great,” Sequim coach Craig Brooks said. “Big contributions from our bench as well. Nolan Bacchus and Andy Reynolds did really well against their big guy.
“A bunch of different players made key plays throughout the game. It was a real team win.”
The Wolves are set to host North Mason on Tuesday, Bainbridge on Friday night, and Sammamish on Saturday in a non-league contest.
Looking ahead
Sequim’s bowling team was set to play in Bremerton on Tuesday, and host North Mason at Laurel Lanes in Port Angeles on Thursday.
The Wolves’ boys swim team is set to travel to Klahowya on Dec. 10, and Sequim’s wrestling teams host East Jefferson on Dec. 11 and travel to a Port Townsend tournament on Dec. 13.
