Sports Roundup: volleyball serves up two wins

Football remains undefeated leading to first home game

Sequim High School sports are off and running, and winning. Here is a wrap-up of available varsity results from last week.

Volleyball takes two

The Wolves opened the season with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-15) loss to the South Kitsap Wolves on Sept. 9. However, Sequim stormed back with strong wins at home against Kingston 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 25-13) on Sept. 11, and in Bremerton against Olympic 3-1 on Sept. 13.

Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman reported that against South Kitsap freshman Jordyn Julmist had an impressive debut with seven kills and five digs, while setter Kenzi Berglund led the team at the service line, going 13-of-15 on serves with an ace, 16 assists and four digs.

Rose Gibson also had four kills and went 8-for-8 on serves with an ace, three digs and five perfect passes.

At home against Kingston, Sophie Greenleaf served a perfect 16-for-16, including a 13-serve run with four aces in the decisive fourth set, Webber Heilman reports.

“Sophie getting some good serves in there, it definitely helped us break away from them in the fourth set,” she said.

“We also changed where we were focusing our hitting. We were hitting it toward their better defenders, and we had to change that up.”

Julmist added 13 kills and a pair of aces, while Gibson added nine kills, seven digs, four perfect passes, a block and an ace in a well-rounded performance. Berglund posted 25 assists, two aces, two kills and a block, and Kassi Montero was 14-of-15 with three aces and a pair of kills.

The Wolves (1-0 in league, 2-1 overall) were set to host North Mason on Sept. 16, and travel to Bainbridge on Sept. 18.
