For miles in either direction, Sequim was the only dry spot on the Olympic or Kitsap peninsulas.
The Wolves’ track squad took full advantage of the cool weather and their one home meet of the 2014 season, sweeping Olympic League foes Klahowya and Port Townsend with ease on March 26.
Audrey Shingleton and Sarah Hutchison led Sequim’s girls (2-0) with two individual wins each and teamed with Gretchen Happe and Waverly Shreffler to win the 4×400 relay as the Wolves topped Port Townsend 104-52 and Klahowya 126-29.
Shingleton won the 800 in 2:41 and the 1,600-meter race in 6:04, just seven seconds off her personal best.
Hutchison took top honors in the 100-meter hurdles but topped that later in the meet by clearing 9-6 in the pole vault, just six inches off her personal best and a mark that has her and Sequim coach Brad Moore already eyeing the school record of 11 feet, set by Samantha Whiteside in 2009.
Shreffler blew away the field in the 400 (1:02.95), winning by more than 10 seconds and taking second place to Port Townsend’s Jewel Johnson in both 100- and 200-meter sprints.
Other Sequim first-place finishes came from Emily Webb (3,200), Andria Bower (shot put) and Sequim’s 4×200 team of Happe, Tatum Jensen, Caitlin McWilliams and Emily VanDyken.
On the boys’ side, Oscar Herrera swept the hurdles events and Miguel Moroles topped the field in the 200 and long jump as Sequim’s boys (2-0) knocked off Klahowya 99.5-46.5 and Port Townsend 112-30.
Sequim’s Peter Ohnstad and Brendon Despain went 1-2 in the 3,200-meter race and Brendan Lauritzen won the shot put, edging out teammate Alex Barry.
Barry set a personal best with a 163-7 mark to win the javelin event; the effort was nearly 20 feet better than his top throw at the season-opening Port Angeles Invitational on March 22.
Joshua Cibene cleared 11 feet 6 inches to win the pole vault while Jackson Oliver topped 5-6 in the high jump for first place.
Sequim’s 4×400 relay team of Despain, C.J. Daniels, Quinton Johnson and Jason Springer also earned a first-place finish.
The Wolves are off for spring break and are back in action April 16 when they take on North Mason’s Bulldogs and Kingston’s Buccaneers in Kingston.
