Weather moved two Sequim away games to the home field last week, and after a loss to North Kitsap on Wednesday, the Wolves earned a split with a win against Klahowya on Thursday.

But it took extra innings to knock off the Eagles.

Sequim (3-1 in Olympic League play, 5-1 overall) gave up two runs in the top of the 10th but then rebounded to score three runs in the bottom of the inning.

In Sequim’s half of the 10th, James Grubb led off with a single, Bailey Earley reached on error and Dusty Bates walked to load the bases with no outs. Dylan Lott ripped an RBI single to close the gap to 3-2, but the next Sequim batter, Evan Hurn, hit a screamer back to the mound that Eagle pitcher Kendall Kitts snagged and threw to first to double off Lott.

“It was rocked up the middle — that was deflating,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said.

Nick Johnston then laced a two-RBI single to win the game.

Johnston went 2-for-5 with two RBIs while Lott and Daniel Harker had RBIs.

“It’s a big one with only four playoff spots,” Ditlefsen said about the Sequim win.

Nigel Christian tossed six innings of one-run ball and Johnston worked the final four innings for the victory, his third of the season.

“Nick (has) been our No. 1 for the past three years,” Ditlefsen said. “He’s just having a great senior year so far.”

A day earlier, North Kitsap’s Kole Milyard and Chase Bauer held the Wolves to just four hits and one run over seven innings in a 5-1 Viking victory.

“(Milyard) did a great job; he throws strikes, control runners well,” Ditlefsen said. “We just didn’t have a great day at the plate … and they’re rock-solid defensively.”

Milyard went six innings, striking out five and walking three. Bauer capped the win with a scoreless seventh.

The Vikings broke through with a run in the first, second and fifth innings, and added two in the seventh inning for insurance.

Sequim’s Daniel Harker took the loss, giving up two runs in four innings.

Dusty Bates went 1-for-3 and had Sequim’s lone RBI, driving in Tanner Rhodefer. Harker doubled and Dylan Lott had two stolen bases. Adam Lemmon led North Kitsap’s offense with two hits and two RBIs.

Looking ahead

Ditlefsen said the recent poor weather actually has Sequim at an advantage. The Wolves have four league contests behind them while others like Bremerton and Port Angeles have just one.

“Some teams (will be) logging four games in a week,” Ditlefsen said, putting pressure on their pitching staffs, while Sequim can maintain a normal rotation.

Sequim plays a non-league game at Tyee on April 5, then hosts Olympic on April 8.
