Volleyball: Sequim (3-0) perfect in first week

Wolves earn sweeps vs. Jefferson, North Mason and Port Townsend

If the Wolves were looking for a strong start to the season, it doesn’t get much stronger than this.

Sequim (3-0) swept aside a trio of foes — all in straight sets — to open the 2014 campaign, the most recent an easy win against the North Mason Bulldogs on Sept. 18 in Belfair.

Emily Wallner was 19-for-19 on serves with an ace, led the team with 21 assists and added six kills and 11 digs. She started the match with eight serves in a row as Sequim won going away, 25-11, 25-18 and 25-22.

Fellow senior Alyse Armstrong added a team-high eight kills while Emma LeBlanc paced the defense with 18 digs and Rylie Roberts added eight digs.

“All the girls were covering the court well,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.

Roberts and Ella Christensen added four kills apiece.

“We spread out our offense well,” Webber Heilman said. “Our team is really versatile. We played a different lineup each game and still played well.”

Two days earlier, Sequim played their first home match of the campaign and swept Port Townsend in three games: 25-22, 25-13 and 25-21.

Armstrong led the offense once again with seven kills and 14 assists and added a team-high three blocks. Roberts was 16-of-18 on serves and had two aces. LeBlanc had a team-best 21 digs and Wallner chipped in with nine assists.

“We are doing well with our offense and spreading our attacks,” Webber Heilman said.

Sequim opened the season on Sept. 15 with a non-league, road victory at Thomas Jefferson, a three-set victory (25-17, 25-20, 25-16). LeBlanc and Sydney Balkan combined to go 27-for-27 from the serving stripe. Wallner finished with a strong all-around game with seven kills and eight assists. Armstrong had 17 assists and Balkan added five assists.

“Alyse, Emily and Sydnee were making smart setting choices and spread out our offense very well,” Webber Heilman said.

Sequim was slated to take on Kingston at home on Sept. 23. The Wolves are at Port Angeles on Sept. 25 and at the Monarch Challenge in Longview on Sept. 27 before their next home match, a Sept. 30 date with North Mason.
