Wrestling: Knights power past Wolves

Sequim grapplers snag three wins on the mat versus Bremerton

There’s some fight in these Wolves.

Sequim’s young wrestling squad took its lumps once again on Jan. 16 in a 53-27 defeat to visiting Bremerton, but Sequim coach Charles Drabek and company saw some positives in what was the Wolves’ closest non-tournament match of the season to date.

Three Wolves won non-forfeit matches, highlighted by Michael Latimer’s first round pin of Knight Travon Pino in the 220-pound weight class and Alma Mendoza’s second round pin of Bremerton’s Tierra Johnson at 126 pounds.

Ty Jones earned a hard-fought, 6-3 victory at 145 pounds against Paxton Neyman, while Sequim picked up forfeit wins at 160 and 195 weight classes.

Bremerton earned pins or forfeits in seven of the eight remaining matches, with

Sequim’s Kaylee Ditlefsen making Bremerton foe Cobey Vetch work for a technical fall at 132 pounds.

“It’s a bit of trial by fire,” Drabek said following the defeat.  We’re not really looking at wins and losses. We want to see improvement. We’re looking long-term. In a couple of years, we’re going to be competitive.”

Drabek said he’s expecting stronger and stronger squads in the future with a good core program at the middle school via coach Rich Hay and PE teacher Anthony Gowdy, a former state wrestler for Sequim.

The Wolves (0-6 in league matches) host North Kitsap on Jan. 22 and host the All-Comers Meet on Jan. 25.
