Arrest made after suspect attempts to steal heat pump

Clallam County deputies arrested a man for allegedly attempting to steal a heat pump that was still attached to the house.

Deputies on Aug. 23 responded to the report of a suspicious vehicle at a Clallam County residence north of Sequim, where they found a truck in a ditch next to the residence’s driveway, with the heat pump lying a few feet away.

The truck was registered to Edward J. Bittick, and while deputies processed the crime scene for evidence Bittick called the Sheriff’s Office to report the truck had been stolen. Bittick was then interviewed regarding the incident and ultimately took responsibility for attempting to steal the heat pump, according to the Clallam County Sheriff’s office.

“Bittick admitted that he attempted to flee the area in his truck after stealing the appliance but inadvertently drove his truck into the ditch near the driveway of the residence; rendering his truck disabled; Bittick then fled the area on foot,” the sheriff’s office reported in a press release.

Bittick was arrested and booked into the Clallam County Jail for Felony Theft Second Degree, Felony Malicious Mischief Second Degree, and Misdemeanor Criminal Trespass Second Degree.
