Cross country: SMS boys edge Port Angeles in league meet

Led by Colby Ellefson and Hunter Halverson, Sequim Middle School’s cross country boys team edged rival Stevens and other league teams at Port Angeles’ Lincoln Park on Oct. 17.

Ellefson finished the 3,200-meter race in 12:09 for first place and Halverson was second in 12:50, helping the Timberwolves finish with 27 team points — one better than Stevens.

Sequim’s Win Jones (14:13), Riley Tadlock (14:23) and Alex Meyer (14:28) finished 9-11 to round out Sequim’s top five.

Stevens’ Peter Zelenka was third, finishing in 12:59.

On the girls’ side, only Stevens had enough qualifying runners to earn a team score in the 15-runner race. Sequim’s top finisher was Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, whose 14:11 finish was second behind medalist Zakara Brown of Stevens (13:52).

Sequim hosts a league meet against Stevens and Blue Heron (Port Townsend) on Oct. 23. The Olympic League championship meet is set for Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Lincoln Park.
