Despite some poor weather, the Sequim Equestrian Team got the 2018 season off to a good start at the District 1 meet held Feb. 16-18 in Spanaway.
Sequim High junior Yana Hoesel earned seven top-10 finishes, including first place in Individual Flags and in two team events — Cattle Sorting with Miranda Williams and Drill Team Freestyle Fours, with Williams, Amanda Murphy and Grace Niemeyer.
Hoesel took second in Breakaway Roping and Niemeyer was runner-up in Huntseat.
“Though we are a smaller team this year, we are competitive,” coach Katie Salmon-Newton said.
The first district meet featured about 100 competitors from 10 teams, ranging from Bellingham to Vancouver, Wa.
The next district meet is March 14-17, also in Spanaway.
