Fastpitch: SHS squad closing in on playoff berth

The Wolves are still breathing.

After starting last week with three consecutive straight losses, Sequim’s Wolves (5-5 in league play, 5-11 overall) kept their district tourney hopes alive with a 1-0 rout of winless Kingston on April 29.

Sequim started the week with a 3-2 loss to non-league 2A foe Klahowya on April 23, letting slip two unearned runs in the sixth inning.

On April 24, The Wolves fell behind league runner-up Olympic 9-0 before erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh before the Trojans finally put down the SHS comeback.

Too many errors, Sequim coach Tim Lusk said, spelled doom for the Wolves in an 11-3 loss to Port Angeles on April 25, the Sequim’s third game in as many days.

Sequim rebounded with a shutout of Kingston on Friday, however, with Isabelle Dennis, Shelby Jones and Jessica Dominguez getting two hits each and Jones tossing a five-inning no-hitter.

Looking ahead

The Wolves were in line to clinch the Olympic League 2A division’s fourth seed to the district tournament with a win against Bremerton on April 30 — results were not available at press time.

The Wolves are at Olympic on May 2 before closing the regular season with a pair of games against 1A foe Coupeville — May 3 at home and May 9 on the road.

The West Central District playoffs are set for May 18-19 in Lacey, with the top four Olympic League teams and eight from the South Puget Sound League battling for five state playoff berths.

The class 2A state tourney is May 25-26 at Carlon Park in Selah.
