Sequim coach Erik Wiker said he hadn’t paid much attention to the milestone, but knew it was coming.

Still, the water bucket dousing with 30 seconds left in the Wolves’ rout of Kingston Friday night came as a bit of a surprise — leaving both coach and players grinning as they remained unbeaten in league play.

Riley Cowan threw three first quarter touchdown passes and four overall in a little more than 15 minutes of game time in a 51-14 win over the host Buccaneers last week.

“We want to come in and play our football; it doesn’t matter if we’re playing (defending league champ) North Kitsap or Kingston,” Erik Wiker said.

“We tried some plays we haven’t done before. I think they executed like (we) could have.”

Eight different receivers caught passes for the Wolves — with six different players finding the end zone — as Sequim dominated an overmatched Bucs at Kingston’s annual Homecoming game.

“We’re excited to keep winning,” SHS sophomore receiver Truman Nestor, who finished with a pair of catches for 28 yards, said.

“(We need to) keep pushing, working hard in practice.”

A week after shutting out North Mason, Sequim (3-0 in Olympic League play, 5-0 overall) built a 37-0 lead by halftime, holding the Bucs to just 26 total yards while racking up 386 yards on their own.

Kingston managed just one first down in that first half and completed more passes to Sequim defenders than Kingston receivers (three to two).

Nestor said his highlights were on the defensive side after watching senior defensive back Joey Oliver intercept two passes by Kingston quarterback Joshuwa Reed.

Sequim had already built a 24-0 lead by the time Oliver snagged Reed’s throw on the second play of the second quarter. Jarrett Allen, playing in his first game of the season, snagged a short Cowan pass and streaked 45 yards through the Kingston secondary for Sequim’s first score. After a quick Kingston three-and-out, Cowan found Taig Wiker on a screen and Wiker found paydirt from 20 yards out, and following another three-and-out, Cowan connected with Rigo Langston for a 33-yard score, giving Sequim a three-touchdown lead just eight minutes, 35 seconds into the game.

Cowan completed six of eight passes for 160 yards and the four scores. Taig Wiker, who racked up 80 yards on seven carries, was 10-of-17 for 143 yards, two scores and an interception after replacing Cowan at quarterback in the second quarter.

The Sequim victory marked Erik Wiker’s 100th gridiron win since he took over the Wolves’ head coaching role in 2004, including 10 (in 14 games) against rival Port Angeles.

Since 2004, Sequim has racked up 11 postseason appearances — including six state playoff games — and seven league titles, though they haven’t topped the Olympic League standings since 2011.

The Wolves look to take a big step toward getting back atop the league when they face the second place Olympic Trojans in Silverdale on Oct. 5.

“They always play hard,” Erik Wiker said. “They have good athletes who can bust it … and they’re well-coached.”

The Trojans (2-1, 2-3) are coming off a 55-6 win over host Port Angeles in PA’s 2018 Homecoming game.

Last year, Sequim topped Olympic 31-18 in Sequim.

Under Erik Wiker, the Wolves are 4-4 in head-to-head matchups with Olympic.

Wiker gets to 100

Already Sequim High football’s winningest all-time head coach, Erik Wiker reached triple digits against Kingston on Sept. 28 with his 100th win; Bill Schade (1947-1956) is second with 33 wins. Wiker-led Sequim teams are 100-51 in 14-plus seasons heading into the Oct. 5 game at Olympic. Since taking over, Wiker has seen the most victories come against North Mason (14), Klahowya (11), Port Angeles (10) and Kingston (nine).
