Girls golf: McMenamin, Shea go 1-2 at league final

Haven’t we been here before?

Sequim’s Alex McMenamin carded a 5-over 77 to win the Olympic League 2A girls title at her home course — The Cedars at Dungeness — on May 2.

But it took a solid round to edge teammate Sarah Shea, who finished a single shot back at 78.

The pair are returning to the state 2A tournament while teammate Samantha Smith is headed to the West Central District tournament, held May 16 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, where she’ll compete in a field of 22 golfers for one of the remaining eight spots to state.

Smith shot a 99 at the league tourney to place 11th; the top seven at league earned state berths.

Christiana Hoesel shot a 112 at the league final and is a district tourney alternate.

McMenamin, a senior, placed fifth and Shea, a junior, tied for 15th as the team took fourth place overall — best in school history, at the 2016 state final.

McMenamin tied for ninth at state as a sophomore in 2015, and took third at state as a freshman in 2014.

The state 2A girls golf final is May 23-24 at Indian Canyon Golf Course in Spokane.
