A pair of league wins last week had Sequim’s girls tennis squad perfect in league play at 9-0 heading into this week’s big match-ups with co-league leaders North Kitsap.

Sequim started the week strong with a 7-0 shutout of North Mason in Belfair on April 17. Isabelle Hugonoit led the way with a 6-3, 6-4 win over top Bulldog Makinna Skjonsby. Sequim’s No. 2 and No. 3 singles players Tea Gauthun and Emily Bundy earned Players of the Match honors from SHS coach Mark Textor after Gauthun ousted North Mason’s Kaylie Green (6-3, 6-0) and Bundy knocked off Haily Thomas (6-2, 6-3).

Kalli Wiker and Jessica Dietzman teamed up for a 6-0, 6-3 win over the top North Mason doubles team of Breanna Gaschel and Astrid Lindberg.

Also picking up doubles wins for the Wolves were McKenna Hastings-Ashley Rosales, Amanda He-Arlene Law, and Amber Dietzman-Eden Johnson.

A struggling Bremerton squad managed to take the top two singles matches on April 18, but a deep Sequim team overcame the Knights, winning 5-2.

Wiker and Jessica Dietzman teamed up for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bremerton’s Maileca Gontinas and Cinthia Reyer in No. 1 doubles play, while Hastings and Rosales also won in straight sets, topping Megan DeAngelo and Savannah O’Malley 6-1, 6-1.

Law and He earned Player of the Match honors; He and Gauthun won in No. 3 doubles play while Law and Johnson earned a win in No. 4 doubles.

Bundy added a win in No. 3 singles action, edging Simone Cantal 6-4 and 7-5.

Sequim’s April 20 match at rival Port Angeles was postponed because of poor weather.

Looking ahead

Sequim was scheduled to play league-leading North Kitsap twice to start this week: April 23 in Poulsbo and April 24 in Sequim. Results of both matches were unavailable at press time.

The Wolves are at Klahowya on April 25 and host Port Angeles on April 26 before finishing the regular season with a May 3 home match against Olympic.

The Olympic League tourney is set for May 9-10 in Silverdale. Top players advance to the West Central District tournament slated for May 18-19 at the Kitsap Tennis & Athletic Center in Bremerton.

The state 2A tennis tournament is May 25-26 in Seattle. Sequim’s boys doubles duo of Thomas Hughes and Blake Wiker earned a state berth in the fall.
