Klahhane gymnasts grab gold and silver

Klahhane Gymnastics athletes earned some top finishes at the Washington Xcel State Championships March 23-25, held at the Clark County Events Center in Ridgefield.

The team was led by MeiYing Harper-Smith who captured the gold medal in the Silver Division Junior Senior G Age Group, scoring 37.525 all-around points. Harper-Smith was first on uneven bars (9.425 points), balance beam (9.300) and floor exercise 9.625, and took third on the vault (9.175).

She was followed by Jessamyn Schindler, who finished with a silver medal in the Bronze Senior Age Group with a score of 36.825 points — missing a gold medal by just 0.025. Schindler had individual scores of 9.225 on vault, 9.150 on uneven bars, 9.325 on balance beam and 9.125 on floor exercise.

Also earning medals in all-around scoring was Rylee Evans, who took fifth in a competitive Bronze Junior C Age Group with a high score of 9.600 on uneven bars and 36.775 in all-around scoring. Kayli Sexton took sixth in Silver Division Junior F Age Group, scoring 9.150 on vault and 35. 825 all-around points. Lainy Vig was ninth on balance beam (8.625 points) in the Platinum Junior Age Group.

Rounding out the competitors were Sadie Miller (35.825 all-around points in the Bronze Division), Danica Pierson (35.375 points, Silver Division), Susannah Sharp (34.900, Platinum Division), Emma Sharp (32.375, Diamond Division) and Cassii Middlestead (34.050, Senior Division); Middlestead who was one of 14 seniors receiving a Senior Recognition Award from USA Gymnastics Washington for participation in the USAG program throughout high school.

The three day event featured 1,022 athletes from 48 clubs throughout the state.
