Local youths sink shots at Elk Hoop Shoot

One youth from Sequim and two from Port Angeles took top honors in their respective divisions at the Elks West District Hoop Shoot on Jan. 28.

Hosted by the Sequim Elks Lodge, the event saw winners in six divisions lock up berths to the Washington State Hoop Shoot finals, with 32 competitors representing seven different lodges — Sequim, Forks, Naval Port Angeles, Hoquiam, Ocean Shores, Port Townsend and Bremerton — and more than 150 spectators in attendance.

Izaiah Alonzo of Sequim hit four of five in a shoot-out to edge Bryce Deleon of Port Angeles for the 8-9 Boys Division title.

Port Angeles’ Isabell Felton sank 12 of 25 shots to edge out Sequim’s Roslyn Guile (by one shot) for the 10-11 Girls Division title.

Jake Templer from Hoquiam made good on 22 of 25 shots to win the 10-11 Boys Division, edging former champ Garrett Little of Sequim by two shots.

James Burkhardt of Port Angeles also hit 22 of 25 shots to win the 12-13 Boys Division; Lonnie Kenney of Port Townsend was runner-up.

Other winners included Kay Botkin from Port Townsend (8-9 Girls Division) and Ella Koebelin of Bremerton (12-13 Girls Division).

Winners move on to compete at the state competition, held Feb. 25 at Saint Martin’s College in Lacey; should winners be unable to compete, runner-up competitors take their place.

Winners from state move on to the Regional Hoop Shoot held March 11 at Clark College in Vancouver and top shooters from the regional event would be flown to Chicago, Ill., for the National Elks Hoop Shoot set for April 22.

In 2016, the West District sent two competitors to the national event.
