Miller helps Wilder Baseball to wins

Sequim High graduate Ian Miller helped the Wilder Baseball Club take top honors at the Dick Brown Memorial Firecracker Classic on July 1.

In the semifinal game on June 30, Miller was 1-for-4 with two RBIs to knock off the Centerfield Roosters 18U 8-2. A day later, with Wilder out to a big lead, Miller pitched the final three innings and gave up no runs in a rematch with the Centerfield Roosters. Miller struck out four and gave up two hits and a walk. At the plate, Miller was 1-for-1 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.

Sequim’s Johnnie Young, a junior this spring for the Sequim High Wolves, also plays for Wilder.

Registration is underway for Sequim Junior Soccer’s fall soccer season at www.sequimjuniorsoccer.com.

Ages range from Little Kickers (birth years Sept. 2014-2015); U5-U6 through U13-U15.

Little Kickers’ registration fee through July 27 is $35, U5-U6 is $45 and U7 and older is $55.

After the July 27 deadline, a $10 late registration fee will be charged.

Velarde, Foster play in East-West classic

Two North Olympic Peninsula football players played in the 24th annual East-West Earl Borden All-Star Football Classic at Eisenhower High School’s Zaepfel Stadium in late June.

Sequim senior wide receiver/defensive back Gavin Velarde and Port Townsend offensive and defensive lineman Jackson Foster played for the West team in a 20-12 defeat against the East.

Velarde played much of the game in the West’s defensive backfield but didn’t record any offensive statistics. Foster played on the offensive line for the West.

The game is for senior players in the 1B/2B 1A and 2A classifications.

Free tennis clinic on tap in Port Angeles

Port Angeles High School tennis coach Gil Stockon is running his annual free tennis camp for youths entering the ninth grade and older, held at the Port Angeles High School tennis courts (304 E. Park Ave.), July 16-27. The time for incoming freshmen is 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday, and the time for older high school boys is 1-3 p.m. Players should bring their own water and sunscreen.
