Track & Field: Sequim boys finish 8-0, girls 6-2 in league meets SLIDESHOW

Competing in their fifth meet on the Olympic Peninsula this season — and third in Port Angeles — Sequim’s boys looked right at home as they swept Bremerton and the host Roughriders for the regular season league title.

Sequim’s senior-laden boys squad improved to 8-0 in league matches while the SHS girls earned a meet split to finish 6-2 at a double dual meet on April 25.

The Wolves’ boys tallied 88 team points to top Port Angeles (55) and Bremerton (35). The Roughrider girls (101 points) out-paced Sequim (46) and Bremerton’s Knights (36).

On the boys’ side, SHS senior Murray Bingham took top honors in both 800- (1:58) and 1,600-meter races (4:52).

Seniors Riley Martin and Fischer Jensen went 1-2 in the 110 hurdles, with Martin eclipsing the 16-second mark in the event with a 15.75 effort. Jensen followed that up by winning the 300 hurdles in 40.93 seconds, a season best.

Riley Cowan, a senior, won the javelin with a 157-foot, 2-inch throw. Sequim swept the top three in that event, with Rigo Langston taking second at 135-9 and fellow senior Ben Cowan at 129-2 — both personal bests. Riley Cowan also took second in the shot put (44-0.5).

Freshman Henry Hughes picked up a win in the 400 meters with a personal best 55.18, topping the field by more than two seconds.

Sophomore Erik Christiansen took top honors in the discus (93 feet, 7 inches), with sophomore teammate Noah Eveland third with a personal best of 90 feet, 6 inches.

Junior Darren Salazar set a season best in the 100-meter sprint with an 11.37-second finish; sophomore teammate Logan Laxson was third (11.82).

Senior Liam Byrne won the pole vault with a 12-6 mark and was fourth in the discus (85-8).

The Wolves’ boys also swept the relays, with Bingham, Hughes, Laxson and Salazar taking the 4×400 event in 3:38.47.

In girls events, Sequim junior Hope Glasser set a personal best with a 102-foot, 4-inch throw in the javelin, then added a win in the discus with an 87-10 mark.

Sophomore teammate Abby Schroder won the high jump (5 feet). She placed second in the 300 hurdles (52.89) and third in the 100 hurdles (18.07).

Elizabeth Sweet cleared 9 feet for second place behind PA’s Mckenzie Musalek (9-6) and fellow senior Shayli Schuman was runner-up in the 100 hurdles (16.59).

Freshman Rylie Pyeatt set a personal best in the 800-meter race with a 2:27 finish behind PA’s Lauren Larson.

Junior Daisy Ryan set a personal best with a 28-11 mark in the triple jump, good for second place.

Sequim at Shelton

The Wolves, along with competitors from 43 other schools, battled each other and high winds for top spots at the 59th Shelton Invitational on April 27.

On the boys’ side, Bingham set a personal best in the 800, winning the two-lap race in 1:55.50 — the top 800 time among 2A boys so far this season (according to athletic.net).

Salazar won the 200-meter sprint in 22.43, just 0.03 of a second off his personal best and one of the top times in the state.

Bingham and Salazar joined Logan Laxson and Alec Shingleton win the 4×400 relay in 3:28.23.

Hughes took top honors in the freshman 400 race with a 55.20-second finish.

Riley Cowan placed third in the javelin (159-6) and eighth in the shot put (a personal best 45-4.5).
