Track & Field: Sequim boys reign in the rain

A little rain didn’t stop Sequim’s boys from knocking off their cross-peninsula rival.

Sequim’s boys dominated a rain-drenched, four-team Olympic League meet in Port Angeles on April 20 with 100 team points, easily getting past Coupeville (67), Port Townsend (45) and the host Roughriders (40).

Sophomores Riley Martin and Murray Bingham were double winners last week. Bingham set a personal best in the 3,200-meter race with a 10:22 finish and added a win in the 1,600 (4:52); teammate Jazen Bartee was third in both events.

Martin knocked off the field in both 110- and 300-meter hurdles, setting a personal best in the 300 with a 43.70 mark.

Sophomores Riley Cowan (javelin, 134-0), Liam Byrne (pole vault, 10-0) and Alec Shingleton (800 meters, a personal best 2:07) also won their respective events.

SHS senior Curtis Gorr added a win in the 200-meter race. He set personal bests in the event (23.82) and in the 100-meter sprint (11.65), in which he placed second.

Michael Larsen took first in the high jump with a 5-foot, 6-inch effort.

Gorr, Martin, Shingleton and Fischer Jensen added a win in the 4×400 relay, clocking in at 3:43.

Freshman Jesse Bobst set a personal best in the pole vault, clearing 8-6 to place second.

On the girls’ side, Port Angeles defended its home turf with 95.5 team points, out-pacing Port Townsend (58), Sequim (57) and Coupeville (50.5) for top team honors.

Senior Morgan Bingham led the way for Sequim’s girls with wins in the 800 meters (2:30) and 1,600 meters (5:31), both personal bests.

Elizabeth Sweet, a sophomore, won the pole vault with a 9-foot mark.

Lindsey Leader (shot put, 27-3) and Clarisse Finman (discus, 86-1) each earned second-place finishes, while Hilary Holtrop (high jump, 4-6) and Cheryl Armstrong (discus, 82-11) took third.

Sequim’s 4×100 relay team of Kristinna Barnet, Emma Beeson, Telicia Busby and Daisy Ryan took second in the 4×100 relay (54.35), as did Sequim’s 4×400 squad (Barnet, Ryan, Busby and Bingham) with a 4:38 effort.

Lil’ Norway

Sequim’s boys placed third and the Wolves’ girls were fifth at the Lil’ Norway Invitational in Poulsbo on April 22.

Martin set another personal best in the 300 hurdles with a 42.72 finish; he was second in the 110 hurdles.

Murray Bingham cruised to a win in the 3,200-meter race, a personal best 10:05, while Cowan placed second in the javelin (133-7).

On the girls’ side, Sweet mirrored her 9-foot mark in the pole vault to take top honors while Morgan Bingham set personal bests in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races (5:30 and 2:10), taking second place in both events. Holtrop topped 4-8 in the high jump for second place and Leader set a personal best with a 30-foot, 1.5-inch shot put throw, good for third place.

Host North Kitsap won the boys’ division while Port Angeles edged NK for the girls’ title.

Looking ahead

The Wolves and Kingston take on host Klahowya in Silverdale on April 27.

Select Sequim athletes compete at the 57th Shelton Invitational on April 29.

Sequim’s postseason starts May 6 when they compete at the Olympic League championships in Poulsbo. Top athletes advance to the league’s sub-district meet on May 13 in Bremerton.
