Celtic band plays P.A. Feb. 19

Solas, praised as the first truly great Irish band to arise from America, brings its show to the peninsula at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the Port Angeles High School auditorium, 304 E. Park Ave.

Solas is presented by the Juan de Fuca Festival as part of its 2009-2010 season.

The Solas sound is anchored by American founders Seamus Egan, who plays flute, tenor banjo, mandolin, whistle, guitar and bodhran, and fiddler Winifred Horan.

They are two of the most respected – and imitated – musicians anywhere in acoustic music.

Irish natives Mick McAuley from Kilkenny plays accordion and

concertina; Eamon McElholm from Tyrone plays guitar and keyboards; Mairead Phlean from Kil-kenny sings and plays flute and piano.

Solas has performed at major Celtic and several folk festivals, including in Edmonton, Canada, at the National Folk Festival, Milwaukee’s Irish Fest, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Wolf Trap, New York’s Town Hall and at Queens Hall in Edinburgh, Scotland.
