Miller now heads planning commmission

Planning Commission Vice Chairman Ted Miller became chairman at the panel’s March 3 meeting, succeeding former chairman Larry Freedman, who resigned Feb. 23.

Planning Commissioner Mike East succeeded Miller as vice chairman.

Deputy City Clerk Bobbie Usselman said that as of March 4 she had received one application for Freedman’s position, which expires in 2010.

Applications are due by March 31 for the vacancy on the seven-person board, she said.

Applicants will be interviewed by a city council committee that will make a recommendation to the full council for consideration, Usselman said.

The planning commission makes recommendations to the city council on land development actions, including zoning regulations, and the city’s comprehensive plan, which is the framework for development within the city.

It also approves certain land-use actions, such as conditional use permits and shoreline substantial development permits.

Freedman resigned at the Feb. 23 city council meeting after telling the council he didn’t want to be a lightning rod that takes attention away from the city.

The council unanimously approved a motion stating they "regretfully" accepted Freedman’s resignation after more than five years on the planning commission.
