School leaders to talk grad requirements, state budget shortfall

The nearly $6 billion shortfall in the Washington state budget has local leaders talking – including Sequim’s school board members.

The Sequim School District board of directors meets at a workshop at 6 p.m. Jan. 15 in the boardroom (Performing Arts Building, 533 N. Sequim Ave.) to discuss future funding in light of the shortfall and Gov. Christine Gregoire’s budget proposal, all before their regularly scheduled 7 p.m. meeting.

On the workshop agenda is an analysis of the governor’s budget, a discussion of 2009’s revenue forecast, enrollment estimates for 2009-2010, an update on contract negotiations with employees, a finance committee report, a maintenance and operations levy time line discussion and look at the legislative calendar.

At the regular meeting at 7 p.m., the board is scheduled to talk about new state math requirements that require students take mathematics through Algebra II and complete a math-focused course during their senior year.

Other regular meeting topics include building and special program reports, snow make-up days and the district transportation facility.
