Matter over mind.

Sequim coach Lisa Corbit says her players are well aware of what they have to do on the court, but putting it in play is quite another thing.

"They know what they’re not doing," said the second-year coach after watching her Wolves drop the first of two games at the Crush in the Slush tournament in Port Townsend Friday and Saturday. "It’s converting that knowledge off the court to that knowledge on the court is where we’re stuck."

Stuck is right: Sequim fell to 0-6 on the season despite their best efforts in Port Townsend.

In Friday’s opener against Cedar Park Christian, Sequim was down just 12-8 at halftime before the Lionesses from Bothell surged ahead to a 28-17 lead by the third quarter and outscored Sequim 21-6 in the last frame for a 49-23 decision.

Lauryn Garrett and Kathryn Roeber led the Wolves with eight points while Nicole Phifer had three.

"They’re still a little rusty mentally," Corbit said. "But they’re still talking. They’re positive to one another and helping each other out."

Cedar Park Christian freshman Mattie Shelford led the Lionesses with 24 points.

In Saturday’s matinee, Sequim jumped to a 9-8 first-quarter advantage against Chimacum before the Cowboys pulled away 21-13 by halftime, 37-20 after three quarters and 48-34 by game’s end.

Sunma Agostine led Sequim with 10 points while Yela Minor added eight points and Roeber had five.

The Wolves were slated to play three home games this week. Sequim was scheduled to host division-leading Kingston Jan. 6 – results were unavailable at press time. They take on North Kitsap Jan. 9 and cross-peninsula rival Port Angeles, the Olympic League 3A leaders, on Jan. 10.
