Cassandra Calderon-Castro (in photo, left) and Leslie Cisneros are two of Soroptimist International of Sequim’s Girls of the Month.
They were honored in a brief ceremony held Tuesday, Dec. 10, with Calderon-Castro chosen for November and Cisneros for December.
Calderon-Castro has been on the varsity swim team all four years of high school and has managed the boys swim team for the past two years. Last year she helped elementary school students embrace their native language of Spanish while helping them learn English.
Calderon-Castro’s academic plans include enrolling in a four-year university in Washington and majoring in pharmacy with a minor in language.
Cisneros has been playing soccer since she was 8 years old and is now captain of her team. She helps elementary Spanish-speaking students learn English. Cisneros once had to learn English herself and said teaching is rewarding.
Her goal is to set an example to other Hispanic students by showing them they can achieve a college degree and be successful. She said she hopes to attend the University of Washington or Western Washington University, possibly majoring in early childhood education or psychology.
