After losing a heartbreaker two nights before and falling to 1-5 in league play, Sequim still had plenty to play for last Thursday.

For the seniors. For pride. And, with a little help, for the postseason.

The Wolves got all three, topping Bremerton 3-1 in their final home game as North Kitsap was knocking off Port Angeles.

"The kids really tried hard and played with a lot of heart," Sequim co-coach Victor Lancheros said. 

"I talked to the kids (and told them), it’s do or die. We’re not dead yet."

The Wolves’ win and Roughrider loss set up a de facto playoff game in Port Angeles on Oct. 23, with the winner earning a West Central District play-in game on Oct. 31 against the South Puget Sound League’s No. 5 team.

In the rain-soaked matchup with Bremerton last week, it was all Sequim in the first half as they saw goals from three different players. Vianey Cadenas opened the scoring with a free kick in the 17th minute from about 25 yards out.

Leslie Cisneros made it 2-0 after she dribbled down the right sideline and rocketed a 30-year shot over the outstretched Knights’ keeper’s hands.

"We’ve been emphasizing that you don’t need to be right next to the goalie to take a shot," Lancheros said.

Sarah Breitbach, one of two junior varsity players recently called up to varsity, pushed through the Bremerton defense and found the net less than a minute later.

Bremerton notched a second-half score but Sequim held on for its second league win of the campaign.

Two days earlier, the Wolves fell to Port Townsend 5-4 in a shootout after playing scoreless regulation and overtime periods. 

(League matches are determined by "sudden death" overtimes and/or penalty kick shootouts.)

Sequim was up 3-1 in the tiebreaker before Port Townsend goalkeeper Malia Henderson made two saves that helped the Redskins tie it up, and PT’s Nakaia Millman scored the game-winner.

The winner of the district No. 5 play-in game takes on the Seamount League’s top team at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Highline Stadium.
