In a rematch of NWAACC powerhouses, Peninsula got the best of defending champ Chemeketa Tuesday at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
Erick Urzua found Henrique Noujuimei for a score at the 15-minute mark and the Pirate defense, led by keeper Guilherme Avelar, made it stick in the P.C. 1-0 win.
Peninsula outshot the Storm, 12-8.
"The guys played well for our first official game of 2012 — it was great to start the season with a shutout, especially against the team that beat us in the Final Four last year," Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said. "We moved the ball well and did a great job of winning the 50-50 ball.
Also on Tuesday, the Peninsula women took down defending South Division champ Clackamas 2-0.
P.C. opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal from Kelsie Ng at 13 minutes, after Deidra Woodward was fouled in the penalty box. The Pirates got an insurance goal from Morgan Atchley at 50 minutes, with Aubrey Briscoe notching an assist.
The Pirates outshot the Cougars, 19-6.
Denae Brooks made five saves for her first shutout of the year.
"This was a good win against a talented team," Peninsula coach Kanyon Anderson said. "Woodward and Annie Armstrong helped win the midfield battle and the back line anchored by Miranda Sochacki, Shelbi Vienna-Hallam and Melissa Delgado looked comfortable and strong."
