SHS girls claim league 2A crown

No matter the outcome, Sequim coach Brad Moore said, there are likely to be plenty of top-notch prep athletes with little to do come Memorial Day weekend.
Washington state’s prep track and field postseason begins this week, with
Sequim athletes competing in a "preliminary" district meet May 12 at Fife High School.
Top athletes from that meet compete at the West Central District meet May 21-22 at Mount Tahoma, with just two athletes from each event advancing to the class 2A state meet on Memorial Day weekend (May 28-29), also at Mount Tahoma.
"A lot of talented athletes in our district are staying home those days," Moore said.
Chances are plenty of Sequim’s crew will advance, however, if the Olympic League meet is any indication. Sequim’s girls locked up an Olympic League 2A championship with a second-place finish behind league powerhouse North Kitsap.
The Wolves got two first-place finishes from Samantha Whiteside, who blew by the competition in the 100-meter sprint (12.65 seconds) and led the field in the pole vault.
Haleigh Harrison won the long jump (16-9) and placing second in the high jump (4-10).
Anna LaBeaume won the shot put by seven feet, then teamed with Harrison, Whiteside and Chase O’Neil to finish second in the 4×100 relay at 51.39 seconds – breaking the school mark set in 1987.
Sequim’s Allison Cutting and Audrey Lichten battled with Kingston’s Roberts sisters (Ruby and Marina), earning top-five finishes in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races.
Sequim’s boys finished fifth overall.
Sequim freshman Emanuel Herrera picked up a win in the 300 hurdles. With his 4×400 relay team in fourth place one lap left, Herrera pushed the Wolves into second place.
Frank Catelli placed second in the javelin and Thomas Gallagher was third in the shot put.
