SHS hoops splits with Bremerton

The home court was a friendly one for Sequim’s girls in a 1-point, come-from-behind win against visiting Bremerton on Monday night, but a cold shooting night spelled doom for the boys at Bremerton.

In Sequim, Alexas Besand had 18 points and McKenzie Bentz added 15 as the Wolves (6-2 in Olympic League, 6-4 overall) edged the Knights, 61-60.

Sequim was down 17-8 after one quarter, 28-21 at halftime and 46-34 after three quarters before out-scoring the Knights 27-14 in the final frame.

The win keeps Sequim in second place in the league standings, two games behind Port Angeles.

Bremerton fell to 2-6 in league play, 3-7 overall. Sawyer Kluge led the Knights in scoring Monday night with 27 points.

In the boys matchup, Bremerton stayed perfect in league play with a 58-49 victory against second-place Sequim.

The Knights (8-0 in league, 10-2 overall) jumped out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter and 32-20 lead by halftime.

Sequim (6-2, 7-4) got to within 5 points at 50-45 with 2:30 to go after back to back 3-pointers by Alex Barry, but a basket by Tarez Mason pushed the Knights to a 7-point lead they never relinquished.

Bremerton held Sequim to 18-of-58 from the field (31 percent). The Wolves didn’t help themselves from the free throw line, sinking just nine of 23 tries from the line.

Barry led Sequim with 14 points and four blocks, Anthony Pinza had 13 points and six assists, and Erik Christensen added nine points and eight rebounds. Bremerton harassed Sequim’s Rory Kallappa into a 1-for-14 shooting night.

Deonte Dixon led Bremerton with 16 points. Mason and Skylar Lewis added 13 points each.
