Sunland Women’s Golf Association members start their 2014 season on Thursday, March 6, with a round of “Better Nine.”
The group’s kickoff meeting is March 24 with a social gathering without golf. This event is hosted by the current board of directors headed by captain Judy Nordyke. Her elected board includes assistant captain Nonie Dunphy, treasurer Patricia Palmeri and secretary Barbara Evans.
Six new members will be introduced and welcomed to the group, including Sue Elvert, Kitty Merrifield, Mary Kubas-Meyer, Geri O’Clarey, Bobbie Piety and Lani Warren.
A full calendar has been planned for the year, including five internal tournaments. The Drive for the Cure tournament, open to other clubs, will be held in September. This tournament will benefit breast cancer diagnosis and treatment for women in need on the Olympic Peninsula.
In addition, dates for Beat the Champ and Beat the Pro are included along with the Ringer which lasts from May to October. The Ringer is a player’s best score on each hole throughout the time period, then totaled, with the lowest scores in each flight winning.
Once again, the golf season will be culminated with the Halloween Tournament and luncheon, where the Sunland Niners join SWGA to play nine holes. This event is highlighted by spooky hazards on each hole.
SWGA is fielding a TOP (Teams of the Olympic Peninsula) team again this year. Eight players from each of six golf clubs on the Olympic Peninsula form teams for match play competition once a month May through September.
