Wolves drop final meet at Olympic

In a meet emblematic of Sequim’s 2010 campaign, the Wolves battled the host Olympic Trojans closely in this regular season final meet before falling short.
Olympic won seven of 11 events and took the meet 90-77.
Sequim managed to rack up points by taking several second, third and fourth places to keep it close until the final event, where the Trojans swept the top two places in the 400 freestyle
Sequim’s 200 medley and 200 free relay teams – both comprised of Rachel Hardy, Rachel Hughes, Cassandra Calderon and Gianna Vennetti – took first-place finishes.
Hardy splashed to a win in the 50 free, finishing in 27.4 seconds, while Vennetti was tops in the 100 butterfly (1:09).
Sophomore Amariah Clift took nine seconds off her 200 freestyle time, to 2:57, while the 400 free relay crew (Sabrina Marunde, Alison Powell, Kendra Richardson and Autumn Kessinger) shed 18 seconds off their previous best.
Junior varsity swimmer Jamie Gilchrist took nine seconds off her 50 free time and 8.5 seconds off her 100 backstroke mark.
“It was a good end to our dual meet season,” said
Sequim coach Susan Craig.
The Wolves were slated to take on other league swimmers at the Olympic League meet on Oct. 26, aiming for a few more district-qualifying swims – results of the meet were unavailable at press time.
The West Central District meet is Nov. 4-6 at Hazen High School in Renton.
Qualifying swimmers advance to the class 2A state meet, set for Nov. 11-13 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
