Wolves set new school marks in wins

Not a bad way to kick off the season.

Sequim High’s bowling squad is 3-0 – their best start to a season in the club’s nine-year history – after knocking off North Mason 6-1 on Nov. 19 in Port Angeles.

Samantha Whiteside led the Wolves with a 338-pin series and Hope Haabala added a 313-pin series as Sequim swept both regular games, one of two Baker games and the total pin count.

The Wolves set a pair of school club records earlier in the week in a 4-3 win against rival Klahowya on Nov. 17.

After losing the first game 732-634, the Wolves knocked over 845 pins in the second game to break the old mark of 812 pins, set last year in a loss to Olympic.

Sequim and Klahowya split the Baker games and the Wolves took the win with overall total pins, 1,756 to 1,701.

Sequim’s Kim Duce set a school mark with a 349-pin series, topping a 339-series mark Whiteside set last season.

Sequim coach Randy Perry said they tweaked the way Duce winds up, bringing her elbow in closer and that made a big difference in upping her pin totals.

"We noticed that Monday, almost toward the end of practice," Perry says.

Not to be outdone, Whiteside set a single-game school record with 195 pins in game two, topping Duce’s 191-pin record from the 2008-2009 season.

Sequim’s Alex Whiteside chipped in with a 298 series along with Johanna Ewing (272 pins). Lola Macia, an exchange student, filled in for varsity starter Haabala and had a 253-pin series to aid in the victory.

The win offset another strong performance from Eagle Carys Bailey, who topped all individuals with a 225-pin game and 382-pin series.

The Wolves were scheduled to take on Bremerton on Nov. 24 and Olympic, the state tournament runner-up, in Silverdale on Dec. 1.

Sequim hosts Peninsula on Dec. 3.
