In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Claire Hallinan’s third-grade class held a readers’ theater for parents and other third-grade classes, featuring excerpts from Dr. King’s famous speech. Every student was responsible for reciting their own line. Students also sang two patriotic songs, “Separate but Equal” and “He Had a Dream,” set to karaoke music. The class learned multi-syllable vocabulary words and their meanings and reasons why our nation celebrates the life and work of Dr. King.

â–  Got Math? Greywolf Elementary is offering an open invitation to all staff, students, administrators, board members and the community for an evening of math games and an ice cream social gala event in the gym. Be sure to mark your calendar for 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3. Student experts will guide you through math games that are part of our curriculum study. We look forward to seeing you at this annual enjoyable event!

â–  Drum Circle meets Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Dave Luebbert is the very capable Caribbean/African drum circle instructor. He also shares his talents with the Snap program and the Boys & Girls Club in Sequim. The students are learning to “speak their drums” using fundamental rhythmic patterns in unison, echoing and dialogue. Cross-brain networking, coordination, focused concentration, listening skills and keeping the steady beat with eventual layered ensemble playing all come together in drum circles.

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

â–  SHS Band Boosters are sponsoring a rummage sale 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, in the cafeteria to help raise money for the spring trip to the Heritage Festival in Anaheim.

â–  Once again this year, students in German II and III completed visual and written presentations of a city in a German-speaking country. Their presentations were partly to totally in German. The quality of work was outstanding this year, and four students were chosen by their peers for the best visual presentations.

This year’s winners were: Brenna Moore for her presentation of Bern, Switzerland; Stephanie Laurie for her presentation of Muenster, Germany; and Allison Seeber-Lestage and Sarah Stoffer for their presentation of Essen, Germany.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated and especially to the winners for their extra effort. Sehr gut gemacht!

â–  SHS is proud of seniors Kim Duce and Sage Brown for making the all-league bowling team for the year! Four members of the team, including Duce, Brown, Danyelle Wilson and Mikayla Ahlin advanced to compete in the district tournament to be held in Tacoma on Jan. 29. We will be looking for more female students to come out for the bowling team next year!

â–  Senior play: ‘One Hundred Years of Comedy’

In celebration of Sequim High School’s 100th year, the senior class will present a special night of comedy entitled “Senior Night Laugh-In: One Hundred Years of Comedy.” A large cast will entertain the audience with sketches from such famous comedians as Red Skelton, Carol Burnett, Lucille Ball, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Laurel and Hardy and even the Three Stooges. In the mix will be some original sketches for a night of laughs for all ages.

The show opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Sequim High School auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave., with additional 7 p.m. performances Feb. 5, 11 and 12, and one at 4 p.m. Feb. 10. Tickets are available at the door one hour before each show. Admission is $7, $5 for students with ASB cards, children 12 and younger, and senior citizens. For more information, call 460-7517.

â–  Parents of seniors — Senior ads that will appear in the yearbook may be purchased for $50 at the high school office. The deadline is Jan. 28. A quarter-page ad includes a baby photo of your senior (which you will need to provide) and a short parent sentiment (less than 50 words).
