DISTRICT

Patsene Dashiell, Sequim School District’s coordinator for the United Way campaign, is excited to report this year’s campaign raised over $17,000!

The main goal of this year’s campaign was to raise participation, and we achieved that by increasing the number of donators by 13 percent over last year’s campaign. Congratulations to Connie Stites, head secretary and the Sequim Middle School team and to Monique Brasher and Greg Newton, teachers, and the Greywolf Elementary team, on both buildings achieving 100 percent donation participation.

In recognition of a challenge well met, Superintendent Kelly Shea will prepare a staff breakfast at each building.

Special thanks go out to our building representatives: Vienna Barron/Transportation, Brian Berg/Sequim High School, Monique Brasher/Greywolf Elementary, Terralyn Dokken/Olympic Peninsula Academy, Valorie Knieper/District Office, Ione Marcy/Helen Haller Elementary, Greg Newton/ Greywolf Elementary and Connie Stites/Sequim Middle School. Sequim School District will host an awards ceremony for Albert Haller grant presentations on Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m. in the Sequim High School library. For more information, call Administrative Assistant Marilyn Walsh at 582-3262.

On Oct. 30, there will be no school for Greywolf Elementary and Helen Haller Elementary only, as parent conferences will take place. Parent conferences are by appointment, and invitations have been sent out in advance.

On Oct. 31, there is no school, districtwide. Parent conferences will take place at Sequim Middle School from 7:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m., with the book fair set up in the library, and at Sequim High School, from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. in the gym.

Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday, November 2. Be sure to set your clocks back one hour!

There is a board meeting on Monday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. in the board room. Board meetings are open to the public and there is time set aside at each meeting for public comments. The agenda for the board meeting is available on the district website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us/domain/7.

Two public forums on school facilities are scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to discuss facility needs in our schools. The forums will take place in the Sequim High School Science classroom B-2, located at 601 N. Sequim Ave. For more information, call the district office at 582-3260.

GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Stacy Campbell’s second-grade students received a reward for finishing early all work for the week by Thursday! These students worked hard all week and proved they had earned an art day from their teacher. Alexia Constant, Jorel Bessey, Elissa Brown, Ava Welch, Jonathen Perez and Olivia Carlson each created pumpkins for Halloween out of “rip art.” This is where you take paper and rip it up into small pieces to form the picture you are trying to create.

Students also received a lesson in painting and how to use paints buy doing leaf paint presses. Finally, students were also allowed to have free paint exploration in creating new colors by mixing existing colors.

Cathy Green’s first-grade class made paper black cats and this is what they wrote about their cats:

SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL

In Marcia Garrett’s eighth-grade science class, students have been modeling scale and proportion of the Sun-Earth-Moon system with scale models, in the classroom and in the hallway. They use dance movement in the classroom to model rotation and revolution. They also use focused light from a flashlight on a model of Earth to demonstrate what causes seasons on our planet.

Student-led conferences are Friday, Oct. 31 from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students will only come to school on Oct. 31 to present their conference to their parent or guardian. Each student-led conference will take 15-20 minutes. Parents, please arrive on time so we can stay on schedule.

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

Parent/teacher conferences will be held in the gym on Friday, Oct. 31, from 7:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (closed for lunch from noon-12:45 p.m.). There will be no school on this day; however, students are encouraged to attend the conference with their parent/guardian. We will be holding an arena-style conference, with staff being divided by departments.

The public is invited to attend a choir concert on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The choir is under the direction of John Lorentzen, music teacher.

Senior photos for the yearbook are due to Jim Heintz, photography teacher and yearbook advisor, no later than Oct. 31.

The annual Jazz Dinner & Dance is Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Tickets are available at the high school office or at the door for $15/single or $25/couple. The menu is “Choose a Pasta, Pick a Sauce” Italian dinner. For more information, contact Band Booster Susan Lorenzen at 477-2677.

The Associated Student Body is sponsoring a blood drive Nov. 4 in the auxiliary gym from 8 a.m.–2 p.m.

The girls’ bowling team begins practice on Nov. 5. The girls practiceand play at Laurel Lanes.
