Magical realism novel discussed

“One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez will be discussed at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

“One Hundred Years of Solitude” tells the story of the rise and fall, birth and death of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Copies are available at the library in various formats including regular print and audiobook on CD. They can be requested online by visiting the library catalog at www.nols.org.

Pre-registration for this program is not required and drop-ins always are welcome.


Sign up for poetry workshops

Two upcoming poetry workshops are available at no charge at the Sequim and Port Angeles libraries. The workshops are intended to provide information and inspiration to write poems and submit to the Rainshadow Poetry Competition.

Facilitators for the workshops are Alice Derry and Kate Reavey, Jan. 7, 2:30-4:30 p.m. in Port Angeles and Ruth Marcus, Jan. 9, 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Sequim. Deadline for poetry submissions is Jan. 23.

Accordion social set

The Sequim Accordion Social will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. A $2 admission is requested at the door to pay for the room.

The Tyrolean Trio from Sequim will perform. All accordion players (bring your accordion) and accordion lovers are invited to attend. Call 683-5620 for more information.


Auditions for ‘The Vagina Monologues’ set

Olympic Theatre Arts, Sequim, will hold auditions for its Second Stage production of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” at

7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, and at

3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, in the OTA Center’s Gathering Hall, 414 N. Sequim Ave.

The play tells real stories of real women by focusing on a spirit of celebration and humor. The cast calls for 3-4 women in their 20s to 60s. A script is available for advance review in the OTA office (1-5 p.m., Monday-Friday).

The play will be presented in the OTA Gathering Hall for two weekends, Fridays and Saturdays,Feb. 27-28 and March 6-7 at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays, March 1 and 8 at 2 p.m.

‘Pocket’ party in Sequim, P.A.

Have fun dancing and singing with the zany, energetic and interactive duo The Harmonica Pocket as they return to the North Olympic Library System for two performances, set for on Wednesday, Jan. 14.

The pair will appear first at 10:30 a.m. at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., and again at 6:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

With swinging story-songs, hula hoops and a suitcase of props, Port Townsend’s The Harmonica Pocket mixes music, dance and imagination games into a joyful jambalaya. Their acoustic show is sprinkled with wah-wah guitar, ukulele, jaw harp, harmonicas, zany skits, creative dance, hula hoops and spinning flags.
