U.S. Navy to study plan for pier in Port Angeles

With plans on building a new pier and support facilities at the United States Coast Guard Air Station in Port Angeles, the U.S. Navy is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, Feb. 5, to provide information and accept public comments.

The meeting is set for 6-8 p.m. at the Naval Elks Lodge, 131 E. First St., Port Angeles.

U.S. Navy and Coast Guard personnel will be on hand at this, an open house-style public meeting to answer questions about the proposed action and the environmental planning process. There will not be a formal Navy presentation or verbal comment session at this meeting, meeting organizers said.

The new pier and support facilities would be used as a staging area for vessels and crews escorting Navy submarines traveling between Naval Base Kitsap Bangor and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This security escort, also known as the Transit Protection System, is operated by Coast Guard personnel.

The U.S. Navy is preparing an Environmental Assessment to analyze the potential environmental effects of the proposed action in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The Navy also is accepting comments on the plan through Feb. 25.
