Buy baskets for fundraiser

The award-winning Northwinds Homeschool Band will plant 400 hanging flowering baskets in preparation for an anticipated performance tour and national competition in Washington, D.C., in the spring of 2017. The baskets are on sale now and available by phoning 452-7189.

Sequim postal carriers to collect food donations

Sequim postal carriers will be collecting donations of food and money for the Sequim Food Bank on Saturday, May 16, as part of the Postal Service’s National Stamp Out Hunger food drive. Put your donation out by your mailbox or drop by the post office prior to 3 p.m.

The most needed items are peanut butter, canned meats like tuna and chicken, canned chili and pasta, beans, rice and other staples. Do not donate damaged items or food with a “Best By” or “Use By” date prior to 2014. Visit www.sequimfoodbank.org or call 683-1205 for more information.

‘Cool Kits’ are coming to area libraries

Parents in many Washington communities soon will have another reason to take their children to the local library – “Cool Creations.”

More than 30 libraries throughout Washington will receive educational invention kits for children to use for a limited time, courtesy of the Washington State Library.

The state library will send the libraries 32-piece Cool Creations challenge kits by Lego and Makey Makey invention kits to libraries in late April.

Libraries in Sequim, Port Angeles, Forks, Clallam Bay and Jefferson County are among the libraries receiving kits.

Indian parent education meeting set for May 5

Parents of American Indian/Alaska Native students are invited to a Title VII Indian Education parent meeting from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s Social & Community Services Building, 72 Zaccardo Road, Blyn. Author to speak at benefit

Peninsula Behavioral Health will have its annual fundraising dinner Friday, May 1, at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

A social hour begins at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. The program features author Daniel James Brown, who will discuss his book of local interest, “The Boys in the Boat.” Tickets are $95 and are available at www.peninsulabehavioral.org or by calling 457-0431 ext. 139.

Serenity moves offices

Serenity House’s Housing Resource Center has moved to 520 E. First St., Port Angeles, to serve local people who need help with housing.

The HRC phone number remains 565-5041. HUB employment, financial and life skills classes also have moved there. A grand opening is planned for May 1, with a ribbon cutting at 1:30 p.m.

Rescue fundraiser set in P.T.

Lanza’s Ristorante, 1020 Lawrence St., Port Townsend, will host a benefit dinner for Center Valley Animal Rescue in Quilcene. All of the proceeds go to help the rescued animals at CVAR. The dinner will be from 5-9 p.m. and costs $25; Call 360-379-1900 for reservations.

Learn about tsunamis

Listen to presentations, stories and songs about earthquakes and tsunamis at 7 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. The event begins with a performance by Port Angeles High School choir group Bella Voce, followed by a local Native American flood legend told by Lower Elwha Klallam tribe member Jaime Valadez. Dr. Brian Atwater, a geologist with the University of Washington and U.S. Geological Survey, then discusses the detective work behind current tectonic connections as well as his book, “The Orphan Tsunami of 1700.” Afterwards, Brynne Walker, tsunami program coordinator for Washington State Emergency Management, speaks about preparing for the next great quake.

SMUG discusses music

The Strait Mac User’s Group will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

Matt Thornton, manager of MacTraders, and an accomplished musician, will discuss the ins and outs of iTunes, iTunes Radio and iTunes Match.

Sequim Little League hosts benefit at Applebee’s

The Sequim Little League will have a flapjack fundraiser at Applebee’s, 130 River Road, from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, May 2.

Breakfast includes two pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon and a drink.

Get your ticket from your favorite Little Leaguer or there will be tickets at the door.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
