U.S. Rep. Kilmer schedules town hall on finance reform

Rep. Derek Kilmer will hold a telephone town hall with constituents focused on campaign finance reform. The event at 6:20 p.m. Thursday, June 11, will feature special guest Trevor Potter, former Federal Election Commission chairman. Participants will have the opportunity to ask Potter and Kilmer a question or leave a message with their questions or comments on campaign finance reform.

Residents of the 6th District who would like to join the call can sign up at http://kilmer.house.gov/contact/townhall or send an e-mail to kilmer.teletownhall@mail.house.gov with their name and phone number by 3 p.m. today, June 10.

Rally for young aviators

EAA Chapter 430 will be holding its second Young Eagle Rally from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, at William Fairchild International Airport in Port Angeles.

Young aviation enthusiasts ages 8-17 should bring their parent(s) along for (permission’s sake) for free airplane rides. In case of inclement weather, the rally will be postponed to the following Saturday.

Ice cream social on tap

The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim, will have an ice cream social from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 14. The cost is $5 for a banana split or a sundae. Proceeds will go to benefit the Captain Joseph House in Port Angeles.

Photographing birds in flight

The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will hold its annual June potluck and meeting on Wednesday, June 17, with dinner at 6 p.m. and a program at 7 p.m., at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road at Railroad Bridge Park in Sequim.

After 30-plus years as an action/photography enthusiast, Chris Perry retired to Sequim to capture birds in flight.

He will share some of his favorite images and divulge methods used to capture them. Part of the program will include the presentation of OPAS’s Harlequin and Conservation awards for 2015.

Bring a dish to share plus your own plate and utensils. The program is free and open to the public.

New overlook at Glines Canyon

With Elwha River restoration fully under way in the Elwha Valley, visitors have a new site from which to view the restoration process and learn about its history. The new Glines Canyon Spillway Overlook, located along the Olympic Hot Springs Road, includes eight interpretive exhibits.

Extension offers 4-H CTA Sewing Day Camp

Clallam County 4-H and WSU Clothing Textile advisors present Beginner’s 1 and Continuing Sewing Camp for youths ages 8-18. This day camp will be held the mornings of July 28-31 at Viking Sew and Vac, 707 E. First St., Port Angeles. To register, contact Jenny Schmidt, 4-H program coordinator, at 417-2398 or e-mail jenny.schmidt@wsu.edu. Cost is $45 per youth. Scholarships are available. Classes will be filled on a first-registered-and-paid basis. Registration deadline is June 18.  At the camp, youths learn to navigate their sewing machine, use basic sewing tools and be provided with several projects, each designed to improve sewing skills. All class materials will be provided along with a basic sewing kit.

P.C. board to meet

The regular June meeting of the Board of Trustees of Community College District No. 1, Peninsula College, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday, June 11, in Cornaby Center on the college’s Port Angeles campus, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Library book sale set

Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, June 13. The sale site is located behind the

Sequim Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave. Parking is available. Special collections for the June sale are special publications, paperback mysteries and aviation books.

All funds raised provide the library with the ability to run programs for both children and adults, including the Summer Reading Program.

Discovery Center in P.A. opens for summer

NOAA’s Olympic Coast Discovery Center, at The Landing, 115 E. Railroad Ave. in Port Angeles, is open for the season. It is a free, public visitor center for Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary that helps inform visitors about the sanctuary’s natural and cultural resources, research and educational programs.

The center offers exhibits on sanctuary ecosystems and wildlife such as Olympic Coast’s marine mammals. The center is open daily, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., through Sept. 7. From Sept. 8 through mid-October it will be open on weekends.

Museum offering balloon rides

Captain Crystal Stout of Morning Star Balloon Co. offers tethered balloon rides starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, on the lawn by the Museum & Arts Center’s DeWitt Administration Building, 544 N. Sequim Ave. Cost is $10 with sign-ups available for balloon rides the week of the Olympic Peninsula Air Affaire, which runs Aug. 29-30.

Area libraries to launch summer reading program

To celebrate the launch of the 2015 Summer Reading Program for young people, the North Olympic Library System hosts a kickoff event from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

The Hands on Children’s Museum of Olympia will be at the library throughout the day with its collection of wooden cars, catapults, airplane launchers and wind tunnels. Stations will be placed around the library for children and teens to sign up for this year’s summer reading program, create superhero masks and puppets, and participate in other hands-on activities. Everyone who signs up for summer reading at the kickoff event receives one entry for a special prize drawing.

The 2015 Summer Reading Program takes place at all NOLS libraries through Aug. 1 and provides programs to encourage children to continue reading and learning during their summer vacations. Chimacum animal rescue seeking donations

Donations are needed to help support the animals for the Center Valley Animal Rescue Garage Sale at the Chimacum Grange, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday-Saturday, June 19-20. Bring donations of gently used garage sale items and garden or house plants to the Chimacum Mini Storage, 1173 Chimacum Road, Port Hadlock, from 5-7 p.m. June 10.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
