Planning commission to talk shoreline master plan

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. Agenda items include a review of the Draft Clallam County Shoreline Master Program. Call 417-2277.

Town hall set

There will be a town hall meeting on neighborhood revitalization at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, in the Sequim Civic Center chambers, 152 W. Cedar St., Sequim. The public is encouraged to attend.

Free ONP day

The National Park Service is turning 99 years old on Aug. 25 and across the country, park visitors will get a present — free entry to any national park, including Olympic National Park.

Last chance for banana split

The Sequim Prairie Grange will have this season’s last ice cream social from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23. The cost is $5 for a banana split or a sundae. Proceeds will used by the Grange for its many projects and activities. The Grange Hall is at 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.

Salal permits offered

Olympic National Forest’s Special Forest Products Program Manager announces that permit sales for salal will begin in September. Permits will be issued from the Forks, Quinault and Quilcene offices during business hours on Sept. 9, Nov. 4, Jan. 6 and March 9. Each permit will cost $150 and can be used for up to two months.

A valid United States picture identification will be required at the time of purchase and those buying the permits must be at least 18 years of age. Cash or checks will be accepted, but no credit cards or debit cards will be accepted. For more information, contact David Perez at 360-956-2316.

Trinity dinner planned

A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim. The meal includes hamburger stew, corn, coleslaw, desserts and beverages.

Reservations may be made by phoning the church at 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by e-mail to dinners@sequimtumc.org. The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

Fish biologist to speak

Joe Peterson, groundfish biologist for the Makah Tribe, is the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Puget Sound Anglers’ North Olympic Peninsula Chapter. The meeting is set for 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim.

Peterson’s role involves harvest management, stock assessments and groundfish policy through the Pacific Fisheries Management Council and the International Halibut Commission.

Historical society hosts annual garage sale

The Clallam County Historical Society’s annual garage sale is 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Aug. 28-29, and 8 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept. 4-5, held at the old Lincoln School site at the corner of Eighth and C streets in Port Angeles.

A members-only preview sale is 4-6 p.m., Aug. 27; interested parties may become a member of the historical society that afternoon and take advantage of early shopping.

Proceeds from the sale benefit the Lincoln School Project.

Rotary sponsors blood drive

The Rotary Clubs of Sequim sponsored blood drive, in conjunction with Bloodworks Northwest, will be held at the Sunland Golf & Country Club, Sunland Clubhouse, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. (closed for lunch 1:45-2:45 p.m.) Appointments are available and walk-ins welcomed between appointments. All who are able are encouraged to donate.

Shelter Providers to meet   at new time

The Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County will meet Wednesday, Sept. 16, in Room 160 of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The meeting time has changed to 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Agenda items include updates on services, housing and funding, and the two-county Regional Forum on Ending Homelessness, to be held Nov. 18 at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Center in Blyn. Sign-in begins at 9:45 a.m.

Walkling trust accepting applications for grants

The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust is accepting applications for grants to be awarded in 2016. The trust awards grants to encourage new civic and charitable projects to benefit citizens of Port Angeles and Clallam County.

For applications, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust, PO Box 1588, Port Angeles, WA 98362. Submit completed applications by Sept. 30.

Myrtle Walkling, who died in 1992, created the trust in her will and funded it with more than $1 million.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.

Friday, Aug. 21: Cranberry salad, roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cut corn, pumpkin cookies

Tuesday, Aug. 25: Pea salad, slice of ham, mac & cheese, broccoli/cauliflower, blueberries and ice cream
