One year later and one        Sequim swimmer is one place and more than one second better at state.

Sydnee Linnane, a sophomore, returned to compete at the 2A state swimming championships on Nov. 14 and took 18th in the 100 yard backstroke at 1:08.02. She took a quarter-of-a-second off her best time of the season at the meet in the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Last year, she placed 19th at state with 1:09.59, and this year she was less than 2 seconds from qualifying for the finals. First place went to Taylor McCoy of Pullman at 56.45 seconds.

Sequim coach Anita Benitez said Linnane swam great and they saw some amazing swims over the meet.

Linnane was the lone Sequim swimmer at the state meet while Port Angeles’ squad took sixth overall with 148 points. She qualified for state at the districts meet at Hazen High School a week prior and competed with seven other Sequim girls in different events.

One big question for swimmers next season is whether they’ll compete and practice in Sequim or Port Angeles depending on what happens with SARC’s pool.

Following the facility’s closure on Oct. 30, the SARC

Foundation provided enough funds to keep the pool open a few hours weekdays with donated lifeguard time so the team could practice through the state tournament.

Some answers may come from the YMCA of Clallam County’s feasibility study of managing the facility, which it will present at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Sequim Civic Center, and the SARC board will discuss at 5 p.m. later that day in the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.
