Hastings take local pickleball title

Allison and Doug Hastings took top honors for the Sequim Picklers’ Valentine’s Day Sweethearts Tournament in mid-February.

Second place went to Christiana and Arvo Johnson, with Margie and Gary Rone in third and Beverly and Marty Hoffman placing fourth.

Avalanche squad is headed to state

The Olympic Avalanche Black girls’ seventh-grade basketball team has qualified to participate in the Washington State Middle School Championships in Spokane on March 11-13.

This is one of the largest tournaments in the Pacific Northwest, with as many as 250 participating teams.

The Olympic Avalanche is comprised of top girls from across the North Olympic Peninsula, including Sequim’s Kalli Wiker.

Sequim’s Albin caps season at state

Sequim’s Ennisa Albin took 96th overall on the uneven bars at the state 2A/3A gymnastics tournament at the Tacoma Dome Feb. 19-20.

Albin, a sophomore, scored 3.275 points in the event in her second appearance at the state meet. In 2015 as a freshman, Albin tied for 52nd in the balance beam.

She earned a state berth the week previous, placing 30th at the class 2A/3A District 3 regional tournament in Des Moines.

Because Sequim High School doesn’t have a gymnastics team, Albin competes with Port Angeles during the regular season.

At the state tourney, Port Angeles finished seventh as a team. Their top finishers were Cassii Middlestead (31st overall), Maya Wharton (44th), Nikaila Price (53rd), Lexi Hefton (54th) and Sydney Miner (56th).

Kamiakin won the team title.
