SHS’s Breckenridge picked for MVP

SHS senior Megan Breckenridge, who was named All-Olympic League 2A first team as an outside hitter, recently was named as the All-Peninsula Volleyball MVP, as determined by a poll of area coaches and the Peninsula Daily News sports staff.

An all-around contributor for the Wolves, Breckenridge was good on 93 percent (223 of 240) of her serve attempts in play while picking up 27 aces. She also led the Wolves in digs with 298, and serve-receive passes with 123, while totaling 124 kills, second-most on the team.

Her play helped Sequim rally to win three straight loser-out district contests to advance to state for the first time since 2012.

Kayak evening set

Paddlers and adventure film buffs will be treated to tales of hair-raising adventure, wildlife encounters, self-sufficiency and lessons learned in a keynote presentation by  expedition kayaker and adventure filmmaker Justine Curgenven at the Port Angeles Kayak & Film Festival, at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

Titled, “Sea Kayaking the World,” the presentation will feature clips from Curgenven’s award-winning films, highlighting paddling excursions along the wild coastlines of Russia, Antarctica, New Zealand, Patagonia and the Aleutian Islands.

The event will be at the Peninsula College Maier Performance Hall, 1502 E. Lauridsen Boulevard in Port Angeles. Tickets are $10, available online or at the door.

SHS football duo gets PDN honors

Wide receiver/returner Gavin Velarde and offensive lineman Zack Hebert were named to the All-Peninsula Football team, as determined by a poll of area coaches and the Peninsula Daily News sports staff.

Velarde caught 41 passes for 690 yards and six scores, and added a pair of touchdowns on kick returns.

Hebert helped the Wolves rack up 2,671 total yards — about 335 yards per game — including 1,279 through the ground game.

Connelly wins

Sequim’s Marc Connelly took top honors in the men’s doubles division at the Sun City Anthem pickleball tournament in Florence, Ariz., on March 24.
