Fly like an eagle

Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 430 will be holding its first Young Eagle Rally from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Sequim Valley Airport. Young aviation enthusiasts, ages 8-17 should bring their parent(s) along (for permission’s sake) for free airplane rides.

New in town?

If you are new to Sequim or considering relocating to Sequim, the New in Town Conversation gathering has been designed for you. The events are from 2:30-4:30 p.m. each third Wednesday every other month at First Federal, 333 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim.

The next is May 18, with featured guest Patty Mc-Manus-Huber who will shed  light on the farming history of the area. Other dates this year are July 20, Sept. 21

and Nov. 16. Meet other newcomers, learn more about the history of Sequim, volunteering opportunities and about how to handle the stresses and strains of relocation.

Mushroom enthusiasts meet today in Gardiner

The Olympic Peninsula Mycological Society holds its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road, Gardiner.

The guest speaker is Becky Selengut, chef, cooking teacher and author of “Shroom: Mind Bendingly Good Recipes for Cultivated and Wild Mushrooms.” She will discuss foraging for mushrooms and other wild edibles, and recipes incorporating foraged foods.

Sweat the small stuff

The Clallam County Marine Resources Committee presents two speakers who have worked extensively on marine debris projects from 5-6:30 p.m. Monday, May 16, at the meeting room in the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Hillary Burgess, science coordinator at COASST, and Anne Murphy, retired executive director of the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, will present “Citizen Science and the Impact of Small and Micro Debris in Washington.”

The public is invited and encourage to attend.

Police memorabilia on display at museum

The Sequim Police Department has worked with the Seqim Museum to develop a display of Sequim Police memorabilia, including old uniforms, radios and duty gear. The memorabilia will be on exhibit through May at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

The display was produced to commemorate National Police Week which begins May 15.

The center is open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Library’s book sale set

The Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave.

This month the sale features mystery novels. In stock are the Martha’s Vineyard books by Philip Craig, a complete set of 14 Mongo books by George Chesbro, all 21 of the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich, and food theme novels ( which include recipes) by Diane Mott Davidson.

The Buck-For-2-Bags sale outside will begin at 10 a.m.

PFOA Purr-Fect Arts Event planned

The inimitable band Crocs with their rock, blues and funk stylings and the talented Washington Old Time Fiddlers will be jamming at Studio Bob, 118 1/2 Front St., Port Angeles from 5:30-9 p.m. Saturday, May 21.

Storyteller Ingrid Nixon also will be weaving her tales for the benefit of Peninsula Friends Of Animals. An art show featuring local artists will be featured. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Let’s watch a parade

The DEAFOP group is planning to attend the Irrigation Festival and watch the parade this Saturday, May 14. The parade is from noon-2 p.m. and members will gather in front of Hurricane Coffee.

Band launches flower basket fundraiser

The award-winning Northwinds Homeschool Band planted 400 hanging flowering baskets in preparation for an anticipated performance tour to Washington, D.C., in the spring of 2017.

The baskets are available now by calling 681-2986. Cost is $30 per basket with a 10 percent discount for orders of four or more.

The Northwinds Homeschool Band, a nonprofit entity, is led by director Dan Tutton and is committed to providing a foundational music opportunity for homeschooled children.

Talk of trail’s future

The Peninsula Trails Coalition is holding its annual membership meeting, open to the public, Thursday, May 19, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 Hendrickson Road in Sequim.

Light refreshments begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by presentations from 7-8:30 p.m. about current and future developments of the Olympic Discovery Trail in Clallam and Jefferson counties.

This meeting provides an opportunity to talk with the people engaged in designing and maintaining the trail.

Boating safety class set for May 16

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a low cost Boating Safety Class this Saturday, May 16. Families are welcome.

Sea Hawkers raising funds for Flint water

The Olympic Peninsula Sea Hawkers, a local fan group of the Seattle Sea-hawks, are accepting donations to buy drinking water for the residents of Flint, Mich.

This past February the club raised enough money to buy about three-and-a-half pallets of water for Flint.

On May 14, group members will be set up at the Show N’ Cruz Car Show in the Sequim Walmart parking lot, 1284 W. Washington St., from 9 a.m. to the end of the show. On May 28, group members will be at the Dream Machine Show and Shine at 7 Cedars Casino starting at 9 a.m.

In addition, group organizer Dami Rodriguez (457-1392) said she can pick up any donations from any local business, company, club or individual.

Flint is the hometown of the Seahawks running back Thomas Rawls. “We want to show him that the 12s have his back,” Rodriguez said.

NPBA surplus sale set

The North Peninsula Building Association will hold its annual Builders’ Surplus Sale at the Clallam County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 14.

The sale will run from noon-3 p.m. and there will be a large selection of new and used building materials and home improvement supplies along with discounted service certificates for landscaping materials.

The association welcomes donations from the public of saleable items. Limited pick-up service is available.

Shelter Providers meet

The Shelter Providers Network of Clallam County will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, in Room 160 on the main floor of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Sign-in begins at 9:45 a.m. There is no charge to attend.

PUD cancels meeting

The Clallam County Public Utility District No. 1 has canceled the PUD board’s May 16 meeting because of a lack of a quorum. The next regular meeting will be held on Monday, May 23.

County health offices set temporary closure

Clallam County Health and Human Services offices in Port Angeles and Forks will be closed on May 25 for departmental training.

Limited Environmental Health services will be available at the permit counter in the Clallam County Courthouse.

The Public Health Section will be closed and no immunizations will be provided on that day. Call 417-2274.

Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
