Planning commission discusses lodging
The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes preliminary draft regulations for vacation rentals and bed and breakfast inns. Call 417-2277 for more information.
‘Coastal conservation is for the birds’
The Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road in Sequim. Dr. Trina Bayard, director of Bird Conservation for Audubon Washington will present “Coastal Conservation Is for the Birds.” She discusses marine bird life of this region and action to protect their food and habitats. The program is free and open to the public.
City of Sequim hosts online survey
The City of Sequim is conducting a survey to find out more about how Sequim citizens learn about city news and how the city can help the public be better informed about city business. Sequim residents are encouraged to visit the city website www.sequimwa.gov and take a six question survey that is posted under the “Spotlight” section of the homepage. The survey will be available through Friday, May 27.

PC’s First Amendment celebration set
Peninsula College student journalism leaders will provide the campus community a taste of New York City, the media capital of the Western Hemisphere, at the Thursday, May 19, Studium Generale presentation, held in the college’s Little Theater at 12:35 p.m.
Students from The Buccaneer campus newspaper attended the College Media Association’s national conference in New York this past March. They will share stories and images from front-line news agencies from the East to the West Coast. Past groups of Buccaneer students have visited The New York Times newsroom and the studios of Democracy Now!, the Hearst Corporation, the Wall Street Journal and more.

Shipley Center hosts ‘Aging in place’
The Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., Sequim, is sponsoring the Building Your Caregiver Tool Box conference from 1-3 p.m. Friday, May 20, at the center. The free conference is for family and professional caregivers and its focus is “Aging in Place.” The conference is presented by The Caregiver Coalition. Thrift shop open
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop at 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 21. The shop is bursting at the seams with furniture and accessories, fine jewelry, designer handbags, summer shoes and clothing for everyone, books, kitchenware, plus Hall pottery. All white-tagged items will be marked at half-price. Volunteers always are needed. Only two three-hour shifts a month are required. If you’re new to Sequim, it’s a great way to serve your community and make new friends. Call 683-7044 for more information.
Parent input sought on annual guide, calendar
The Sequim School District provides a printed Parent Guide and Calendar to each school family before the beginning of the new school year. The guide contains key parent notification information and contact information, while the calendar provides information about events throughout the upcoming school year. The district is seeking input about the effectiveness of this publication. By using the link www.surveymonkey.com/r/SSDparentcalendar2016, individuals can complete a survey with eight questions. There is a link to the survey on the main page of the district website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us. The survey is up through June 3.

Sanctuary council to meet Friday at MCRC
NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary will hold a meeting of the Sanctuary Advisory Council from 9:50 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, at the Makah Cultural and Research Center in Neah Bay. During the morning session, there will be presentations on the Makah Cultural Landscapes Project, OCNMS education and outreach project updates, and the Makah Shellfish Biotoxin Monitoring Program extension.
In the afternoon, Makah fisheries biologists will share about a Makah Cibud study for fisheries management, followed by an overview from WDFW of West Coast Groundfish management with a focus on fisheries within Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, with a discussion on how advisory bodies and stakeholders are engaged.
The meeting is open to the public, with public comment periods at 12:15 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Post non-perishable items Saturday
Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is Saturday, May 21, in Sequim. Non-perishable food items, benefiting the Sequim Food Bank, can be left in or near your mailbox and will be collected by letter carriers during their regular rounds.
The biggest needs for the food bank are canned protein such as fish, peanut butter or soups, and pasta meals like macaroni and cheese. The Sequim Food Bank cannot distribute opened, damaged or out-of-date food, so please check the food before you donate.
Last year, more than 12,000 pounds of food was collected for the Sequim Food Bank. For more information, contact Andra Smith, executive director, Sequim Food Bank at 683-1205.
Memorial gathering set for arts center director
The family and the Friends of the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center are hosting a memorial gathering in honor of Jake Seniuk, Port Angeles Fine Arts Center director from 1989-2012, from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd. Port Angeles.
This event is open to the public and an opportunity to share appreciation for an artist and advocate of the arts on the Olympic Peninsula.

Trinity United hosts free dinner May 26
A free community dinner will be served at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. The meal includes turkey, gravy, rice, vegetables, carrot salad, dessert and beverages.
Reservations are required; call at 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by email to dinners@sequimtumc.org.
The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.
Garage sale benefits local families
The Seventh-day Adventist Church, 30 Sanford Drive, Sequim, will have a “Good Stuff” sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, with quality garage sale items. Proceeds buy hygiene items for low-income and homeless families. Call 360-850-8896 to donate or with questions.

Senior Nutrition menu set at Shipley Center
Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
