Sheriff swears in new patrol deputy

Clallam County has a new set of eyes on the road.

Sheriff Bill Benedict swore in the county’s newest patrol deputy, James Gribbon, on June 14.

Gribbon is 2005 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Tacoma. Following high school, he attended Washington State University, where he graduated in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in history and political science.

A former native of Moscow, Idaho, Gribbon traveled to the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy in Burien, where he participated in and successfully completed the BLEA’s physical agility test for admission into the academy’s next class.

Gribbon joins 30 other recruit officers and deputies from across Washington in Academy Class 737, running June 28-Nov. 2.

The 720-hour basic academy curriculum provides recruit officers with knowledge and skills necessary for safe, proper and effective law enforcement service. Instruction includes Criminal Law and Procedures; Traffic Enforcement; Cultural Awareness; Communication Skills; EVOC; Firearms; Crisis Intervention; Patrol Procedures; Criminal Investigation and Defensive Tactics.

Following graduation from the academy, Gribbon begins a Clallam County Sheriff’s Office program that consists of an additional 14 weeks of field training. As a student deputy, Gribbon will be expected to demonstrate in real situations the knowledge and skills assimilated at the basic academy under the guidance and direct supervision of field training officers.
