Top area athletes are one leap, throw or sprint from the state finals.

Sequim is sending another large pack of Wolves to the West Central District meet after earning district-qualifying marks at the Olympic League sub-district track and field meet May 13 in Bremerton.

The Bingham siblings — Murray, a sophomore, and Morgan, a senior — earned solid finishes in distance races to earn district berths. Murray swept the 800 and 1,600 races, earning a personal best in the 800 (2:01). Teammate Alec Shingleton was second, also setting a PR (2:03).

Only Port Angeles’ Gracie Long kept Morgan Bingham from the top spot at the sub-district meet. Bingham took second in both 1,600- and 3,200-meter races behind Long, setting a personal best in the metric mile (5:24).

Sequim sophomore Riley Martin earned a pair of district berths after winning the 300 hurdles (42.59) and placing third in the 110 high hurdles (16.28).

Soph Riley Cowan also was a sub-district event winner with a 149-foot, 6-inch throw in the javelin.

Sophomore Elizabeth Sweet earned first in the pole vault with a 9-6 mark.

Senior Curtis Gorr raced to a second-place finish in the 400 meters (52.33) and third in the 200 meters (23.18) setting personal bests in both. He also helped Sequim High’s 4×100 relay take second (along with Cowan, Keyshawn Whitney and Michael Mattern Hall) with a 45.76-second finish.

Senior Brendan Lauritzen was third in the javelin and fifth in the shot put. Sophomore Liam Byrne topped 11 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault for fourth.

Sequim senior Clarisee Finman was third in the discus (95-4) and fellow senior Hilary Holtrop was fourth in the triple jump (30-8.5). Sophomore Shayli Schuman took third in the 100-meter hurdles (18.65) and soph Kaitlin Viada placed fourth in the javelin with a personal-best 98-8 mark. Junior Kristinna Barnet was fourth in the 400-meter race (1:03).

Sequim’s girls also earned three top-three relay finishes. SHS’s 4×100 team (Holtrop, Emma Beeson, Rylee Gray and Daisy Ryan) placed second, while the 4×200 team (Barnet, Beeson, Ryan and Telicia Busby) took third, as did the SHS 4×400 relay squad (Barnet, Bingham, Beeson and Ryan).

Sequim’s boys took third in the seven-team sub-district meet with 96 points, behind North Kitsap (229.5) and Bremerton (96). Sequim’s girls were fifth with 78 points, behind North Kitsap (161), Port Angeles (106), Olympic (90) and Bremerton (89).

The West Central District meet is May 19-20 at Renton Stadium in Renton, featuring top athletes from the 22 teams in Olympic and South Puget Sound leagues. The top six athletes from each event earn berths to the class 2A state meet, set for May 25-27 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
